heater for 1935 Ford
I would like to purchase an authentic 30's heater for my Phaeton. So far, can't find one on Ebay that looks presentable. Willing to pay someone who will sell me on or repair/restore, but first need to find one.

I have a NOS, still in the box, Southwind heater which would be perfect for your car. I have one in my avatar. If interested PM me. Lawson Cox

Re: heater for 1935 Ford
My '35 coupe had a Southwind heater. Pretty sure it was a dealer installed option in '35. Worked great. I also have a used one I would sell, but it does not have the fuel line to the carburetor.

Ford had very strict rules governing it's franchised dealerships. Ford made unannounced physical inspections and audits of Dealerships, during which a Ford dealer could easily lose his franchise if caught selling non-Ford Authorized merchandise, particularly if the product in question was in direct competition with Ford Authorized products. The rules were sometimes arbitrary, and once revoked, a franchise would never be reinstated. Your Southwind heater most definitely was not a Ford Dealer installed option.

Re: heater for 1935 Ford
Rogue dealer perhaps, since the man I bought if from stated that it was just like the day he bought it new. I guess I should have been suspicious of that claim, because the car also had an after-market greyhound hood ornament.

Re: heater for 1935 Ford
It is my understanding the factory did not offer heaters until ‘38.
You had to buy an after market heater and install it yourself. I suppose most dealers offered that service though. Especially in cold areas. I worked for a car collector who was a heater installer at the Ford dealer in Oakland. They still have a ‘47 Ford he bought new when he worked there. He said he installed the heater himself. At home. He also told me that in those days there were no factory installed heaters. Therefore, most any heater could be considered a correct aftermarket heater I would think. |

I became suspicious years ago when just about every car I looked at "just came out of a museum in CA."

Heaters were available as authorized accessories from Ford since 1935. Perhaps earlier. Someone with acute knowledge of the earlier years would have to weigh in. I have numerous 1940 Ford invoices that clearly indicate heaters were installed at the factory. Before that I am not certain so again, someone that is schooled in those years would have to weigh in.

Re: heater for 1935 Ford
I am the second owner of my '36 Ford coupe. When I bought the car in 1952 it came with a hot water heater mounted on the passenger side of the firewall. I did not know it in 1952, in later years I found out that the heater in my car is a '39-40 Ford unit. The heater looks like it belongs there. At this point in time I would assume that it was installed by the local Ford dealer in Idaho Falls.

Re: heater for 1935 Ford
I gotta go with what Kube posted. He has a class A reputation.
Could it be that California dealers did not get cars from the factory with heaters. Or maybe the dealer in Oakland preferred to install them themselves instead of paying the factory? |

Not much has changed over the years in Dealer/Customer transactions. A customer could special order a car from a Dealer equipped as the customer wanted, if approved by Ford, or could be persuaded to allow Dealer installation of options on a vehicle the Dealer had in stock. The Dealer was a car salesman then as now, and would do whatever needed to make a buck.
