Question Need some motor installation help

We tried to install the motor in our '35 pickup today. Everything was going smoothly until we had it almost all the way down and the oil pan touched the front cross member. We needed to get the engine back about 3/8 of an inch but the U joint bells were bottomed out against each other and the engine wouldn't go back any further. There isn't any play in the rear end so we couldn't move it back.
Here is a pic of the transmission mount. Checking in the books and everything looks right to me.
Everything seemed to need to go back about the same amount so maybe it is the rear end??
For clarification, this is a 59AB going in a '35 pickup

Thanks for any help,
Chris

Any chance you put a 32-34 spring on the rear end by mistake? That would move the rear end forward.

I'll ask the guy who put them in. We bought the truck in pieces and he had the frame all fixed, painted and rolling.
If I put 2 ratchet straps ffrom the rear end to the frame, I can pull it back enough I think without much effort. I just don't know how tight against the back of the tranmission the drive tube should be..

A 32-34 spring would push it forward more than an inch.

Is the U Joint on tight? If I remember right, there is a bolt that holds the U Joint tight
against the transmission shaft.

Check your wheel base.

U joint was on tight. I took the rear mount off the trans to check all that. The bell on the end of the drive shaft tube was tight against the u joint cover on the back of the trans anyway...
I'll check the wheel base. Good thought.

It looks like to me that the speedometer gear connection is not facing the right direction. Additionally it looks like it is not located on top of the driveline. My reference is a '33 car so I may be comment does not apply. My comments do not answer your real question.

With the possibility mentioned about the u-joint, place the transmission in 1st gear, and then slowly turn the crankshaft by hand.....DO NOT use the starter! DD

Wheel base is supposed to be 112 inches. Wheel base on our pickup was 111 1/4 inches. Loosened up the rear spring shackles and pulled the rear axle back to 112 inches. This should make room.
I double checked the U joint on back of trans and its all the way on. Double checked the trans mount assembly and everything is correct according to the green bible and the nice trans mount view in Van Pelts catalog.
Just need to get the motor lift/crane truck back here to try try again..

To me it looks like the trans mount is on backwards---it looks like the hand brake mounting holes areon the wrong side ---and is it a repro mount?

The hand brake holes are on the passenger side of the trans right now.
This is a repro trans mount.
With the way it is right now, the ears on the trans mount are slightly below the output shaft of the trans. If I flip it around, the ears would be slightly above the output shaft and hand brake holes would be under the mounting ear.

That transmission mount is on correctly. The speedo drive is upside down as Larry said but I don't think that will effect the installation.

Thank GOD! I really didn't want to take that apart and safety wire the bolts AGAIN!
I did loosen up the spring shackle and got the rear axle back from 111 1/4 inch wheel base to 112 inch.. This should help considerably..
I flipped the turtle around. Just stuck it on there. Needs a gasket still.

You have the trans mount on correctly. E brake mounting holes should be on right/passenger side as you have them. I am assuming you have the thick washer and U joint bolt in place and torqued correctly. Also the six rear mount/rear trans bearing retainer bolts in place, torqued down correctly and safety wired. I would not put the engine & trans in place without the U joint and area around the U joint covered/packed with a low temperature melting point grease. I like to use John Deere Corn Head Grease in this area.
Also, could you measure how much of the splined end of the driveshaft is sticking out beyond the end of the bell on the torque tube?
You mentioned in a PM message that you have a solid drive shaft but possibly no center bearing in torque tube. If this is actually what you have, the solid driveshaft will flex/bend/wip in the center causing a vibration in the diveline.
