Default Unlocking spare tire cover on 35 Ford coupe

Which way does the key turn to unlock the original spare tire cover? Clockwise or Counter Clockwise?? I didn't want to break the key off.

Counterclockwise will unlock it.

Spray some lubricant into key hole and it will help if pins are sticky.

I had the same trouble with my '36 spare cover. Try pushing in slightly before turning. It worked for me !

On my 36 Spare cover lock --the key wouldnt turn--sprayed WD40 into key hole waited 5 min. or so pushed a little hard on key turned counter clockwise & working fine now. I hope I never need to use the spare tire!

Is this locking rear hubcap/cover locked to a spare tire that's mounted on the back of the car? Depending on your answer, there are different approaches to getting this unlocked if lube/penetrating oil does not freeup the pins in the cylinder and allow the key to work.
