this is a second generator with a diode . There are three wires to one side of the ammeter, all yellow with colors. the other side has a single yellow. Currently the single yellow is on the passenger side of the gauge and the other three are on the driver side. The battery is definitely right.

Poor connections may not allow the generator cut out to bring the generator on line. The 3-brush generator needs a good connection to the battery or it can overvolt if run that way very long so make sure you have good battery cable and cut out wiring connections. If this generator has a Fun Projects regulator that looks like a cut out then it can be damaged. If it is one with a diode then it can burn out and open the circuit from the generator. If it's an original current sensitive pole type cut out switch, then it may not be getting enough current from the generator to close the switch. It gets that current from residual magnetism in the generator pole shoes. If polarity is off for some reason then it won't close the cut out switch.

I agree with DavidG on the wiring. The wire that connects the generator to the amp meter may have issues. That whole circuit should be checked. Koates has it down about testing that generator wire. That is a good start.
