Default Rear brakes rubbing - axle shim?

I took off the rear brakes and I found what appears to be rubbing of the shoes and ebrakes against the drum. A few questions.

1 Will a shim on the axle fix this?

2 can I still use the drum if it’s within tolerance? I have some grooves it it now from the brakes

3 I had alot of grease and grime inside the cavity, does this mean my oil seal on the axle housing needs replaced and can I do that without doing a whole overhaul on the transaxle I really am not up to the preload etc steps.

I will try to upload pictures. It gave me an error on first try

These first 2 pictures show where the rubbing was on the brakes. You can see the shiny areas on both main brakes akes and the e brake

The 3rd picture is of the drum. You can see lighter areas where it has been rubbing.

Rudy

Don’t worry about those seals. Just clean things up and grease the rr brgs by taking the drums off. Don’t use that fitting under the rr axle. Leave the rr axle alone. Those seals only come into play if you try to grease the rr brg from the fitting under the rr axle.
Good luck.

A couple of the pins on your emergency brake are backwards and I don't see the return springs. Here is a picture posted yesterday that may help. I would also check for a bent axle as it looks like there is more ware at the top area of the drum than at the bottom.

I already removed the springs before i snapped the photo. The hub wasnt screwed in real tight, i wonder if that would cause the wear pattern. Is there any easy way to check for bent axle without removing it?

Yes, a shim would move the drum out. You do want the hub/drum on the axle tightly with the hub nut, Check the spec for that but it is tight.... like 100 ft. lbs (or more) if I recall correctly. Also check the key and keyways when you have it apart.

FYI

The return springs in the above picture are not correctly on.
They need to be on the outer triangular tab, not the inner triangular tab.

Thanks, I put the pieces together for the photo and did not notice that the springs were on the wrong tab. And the photo was posted by another Ford Barner.

Thank you Randy!!

Smear a thin coat of some Prussian Blue on the parts (drums?) that are scored and slide them in place and rotate them and see if the Blue is smeared. After you work on the brakes it sometimes occurs that things get back where they are supposed to be (per Mel's post above--maybe things were installed wrong) and the drums are not rubbing anymore. Another possibility, depending on history, is that the rubbing scores happened many eons ago and do not do that anymore. Just a simple check to be sure there really is a current problem. If you still think you need shims check the new setting with the Blue too, to be sure there is no rubbing. Maybe you need 2 shims, at which point you have to make some decisions on getting a new axle. (Actually you can usually hear any rubbing, but the Blue is a great test for confirmation.)

I think it's recent since I could hear it before I pulled the drum. However I will recheck when I reassemble. The main brake was pretty stiff with rust and I'm not sure theses brakes were even working. But then again it's been siting for 4 years as I'm working my way from front to rear.
