Flathead
I saw this photo on the HAMB and I'm curious as to why they would cross the rad hoses?

Re: Flathead
Thousands of weird things have been tried in the past to cool hot running flatheads.
Most didn't work. |

Re: Flathead
This way the coolant switches sides of the block each cycle through!

Re: Flathead
Would be neat to see the rest of the car.
Chopped with 3/2's looks promising. |

Re: Flathead
I've replaced many a lower hose and it is a challenge. Sounds like a good idea to make that job easier. Longer hoses top and bottom may require 23quarts of coolant however.

Re: Flathead
I think it has merit.
The block is isolated from each side, and from what I gather , guys with 2 temp gauges show that temps are different on each side, that must prove that the coolant stays on each side mostly, becuase the only place it can mix is in the top and botom tanks, so to plumb it completely to the other side must be a bonus. Also there is more coolant in the system because of the longer pipes. |

Re: Flathead
That is right pooch, crossing the top hose mixes the water on both sides. My 35 has a temp gauge for each head(side) and they read different, one is a lot hotter than the other.

Re: Flathead
Kids were skinny in those days too. Not too much fast food, no digital devices to keep them on their arse all day, outside all the time in fresh air (other than a fuming flathead ).
Neat old timey pic. GB

Re: Flathead
I spent some time going over my '51 with my infrared remote thermometer one day. The right side of the engine ran consistently 8 degrees F cooler than the drivers side. Both sides were in the 170-180 range (I run 180 thermostats). I don't know what causes the difference, but if I had to guess, I would think it may have something to do with the heater being on that side.
