headliner install/window install

Ok, I have the gasket for the front windshield and no headliner. I understand that apparently the headliner has to go in first and then the glass. I guess what I am asking is can I drive around without the head liner and install it after I replace the gasket. Just trying to plan ahead.

(assuming you are working on '57 Ford wagon)....If your top interior windshield garnish moulding has the clips with teeth on them to hold the headliner in place, it is not necessary to install the headliner first. Go ahead and put in your new windshield, then install front of headliner. It is always best to begin headliner installation at the front and install interior windshield garnish mouldings right away to hold headliner in place so you can stretch the material back and put headliner bows in one-by-one. Once you get to the very rear of wagon headliner, they have tabs above the liftgate framework you can use to clamp the back of headliner to the body.
If you were working on any '50's Ford Sedan or hardtop, you must have the rear window glass removed prior to headliner installation because the headliner material needs to be stretched and glued around the window channel first, then the window gasket covers over it. The window gasket is the only thing holding the rear of headliners on sedans and hardtops.

Thanks Dave, Yes I am working on a wagon and am I clear that there is no trim piece right in front of the lift gate glass? I am asking as some weird pieces were missing from my car and I just want to make sure that there is no trim piece that goes right in front of the lift gate glass.

My Courier wagon doesn't have any interior trim around the rear door opening at all, but the Courier is just a Mainline series cargo wagon. I am sure they have the same attachment method for passenger wagons but I don't know if they had trim pieces.

Mine did not have anything there but then again mine was missing some odd parts so....Apparently there may have been two ways to attach the headliner at that point with and without a trim piece. Just trying to find out more info.

If you go to your 1957 WSM, PART 12 - BODY INSTALLATION DRAWINGS - PAGE 13-38, you will find the detail(s) you want.

Now that info was removed from the FINAL ISSUE MPC but it is described there (WSM).

K, all I have is the shop manual and the 49-59 ford car parts and accessories Ill catalogue. I am not sure what ‘wsm’ is.

WSM is the SHOP MANUAL. There is a partial illustration in there.

The headliner ILL details were removed from both the 1949-59 MPC (FINAL ISSUE) and the SEP 1959 FORM 7635 ISSUE.

Ok, that explains why I could not find them in the illustrated parts book. I will check the shop manual.
