Removing a '34 Sedan windshield frame...
The original windshield glass in my '34 will have to be replaced soon as it is fogging up. I cranked the windshield open to expose/access the six screws in the upper frame hinges. I tried, with no success, to remove these slotted screws with a brand-new screw driver. I don't want to drill these screws out in order to remove them for fear of damaging the hinges and the surrounding area given there is so little room to work. Any suggestions? Is it feasible to remove the old glass by removing the bottom section of the windshield frame?

Dunno about 34's, but with a 35/36, if you remove the header panel you will be able to see the four screws [2 each side] that hold the hinges to the frame brackets...try and undo those....

Re: Removing a '34 Sedan windshield frame...
Pete, I wish I had an answer, but really these old frame are a big problem most times. You being in dry CA, you might have a chance. Here in the swamp...no way. First, to answer your question, can it be done on the car, well, maybe, but you will find the small screws in the bottom corner brackets are usually not very cooperative either. If you got the bottom off, you would then be trying to clean the channel of all its rotten old rubber while laying in some contorted position that would require a chiropractor to help you finish your golden years. I say, Take off the two screws from the opener mechanism, and then the screws under the header that the hinges mount to, so you can get the thing off to work on it in a civilized environment instead of trying to do it on the car. Patience, oil, then patience, and more patience. good luck

Pete, It is four, not six screws as Brian suggests and even if you could unscrew the six you would find that the windshield frame was spot-welded to the adjacent hinge brackets. Move further up and tackle the two screws on each side near the hinge axis.

Re: Removing a '34 Sedan windshield frame...
Heed the info that the brackets on the frame are spot welded besides being attached with thick screws. Pull the header panel to access the bracket to hinge screws.
On a side note; I usually drill a 1/16" hole thru the bracket and hinge and use the hole to align the frame back in the same location on reassembly. Take care when getting the screws out, lot easier to drill the screws and re-tap the holes than it is to fix damage to the frame itself. Once you get it on a table and apart, be sure to get every bit of old setting tape and out seal out of the grooves. If you are doing it yourself, be aware setting tape comes in various thickness. The screws are special; but all the vendors sell them. Compare new to old as I have received new ones that while having the special heads were a bit too long. Research the "fit" of the various vendors rubber seal to get one you are happy with. WD40 or windshield cleaner make good lube and doesn't leave goo like dish soap does. |
