Can anyone help me break down the VIN on my 48 ?

Yeah,............but I can't quite make it out : ) Cars and trucks are different and neither of them tell you very much. It's really just a serial number, not a true vin in the modern sense.

Note the actual number is just a sequence number assigned in the particular series of engines...
the prefix has the only real info, 8 for '48 model year, 99 or 7H designates which engine, and the "A" following the prefix identifies the vehicle as Ford car. Merc, truck, commercial all had different letters there (M, T, C) but engines were numbered in same sequence. If a V8, your number sequence was actually started in 1939 with the first 239 engines and ended in 1948 as new engine families were started.

Some '48's have a tiny box on the patent plate on firewall giving assembly plant...my export Ford has "ED" for Edgewater.
