How many are running an air filter and why?

I always have used an air filter along with engine side pans.

Keeps big things out of the engine. Never a problem with carburetor settings. Stops flash back from carb to.

We are RHD so none of the filters you guys use will work except maybe the "Hiboy" one but that can't be used with one of those oil filters on the side cover kits. We have to get creative. I make a fibreglass adaptor to go from carburettor throat, out through the gap between the choke rod and the column itself, then upwards. A short length of old vacuum cleaner hose connects that to a paper element filter mounted on the radiator stays. It is tight, tight, tight in there so it can take a lot of fiddling to get it right. As I have said before, The Model A is very poorly designed for RHD - there are so many simple and cheap ways it could have been improved on the drawing board.

I also use an original aftermarket AirMaze. It collects a lot of dirt so must be doing something. Does not affect the fuel mixture at all that I can notice.

My Weber carb for a Model A came with an air filter. Therefore, it was jetted to run with one.

If I was running a stock carb, not sure what I would do.

I use a K&N highboy setup and like it. As for whether to use a filter or not - the jury is in - filter. Sucking in abrasive particles and damaging cylinder walls of our cherished engines would be unwise.

Back in the 1980s I ran a K&N type air filter in my 68C....seemed like small price to pay to keep the large particles out of the engine....never any problems over the several years I used it.

I use a K&N filter on my Stromberg 97 because my engine builder said so.

I run the filter setup outlined in post #5 for longevity of the engine. I often drive in dusty conditions and don't feel like paying for another rebuild any sooner than absolutely necessary.

I have an air filter on my carb in the past. Took the pleated paper element out, and used that cage with a length of paper pleated furnace filter in between the cages. low reisteance... I have not yet fitted it onto the new engine.

My Weber down draft comes with a filter. The carburetor compensates for any added air resistance. It is mounted up high out of the way of rocks and dust kicked up by the tires. I just replace the old filter element which was dirty.

I took the filter off but left the curved pipe that points down on. Unrestricted and pointing down for safety.

Air filter cause problems when used on Model A's, if you are hell bent on using something...make that something an air maze.

I can guess but I'm not sure I know exactly what an air maze is. I'm expecting it is some air cleaner that suits only LHD cars and that's why I haven't seen one.

Air maze was an original aftermarket accessory that everybody seems to remember simply because the design was duplicated many times over the years. There was probably some different designs in the era, might be in the unauthorized accessories book.

What is the unauthorized accessories book? What does it say and the what was the reason? Ford sure produced a lot of cars without them.

the air maze was an authorized by ford accessory but there were lots of other brands of air cleaners. it was well known at that time that it was not a good thing to have dirt going through your engine.

this is the unautherized book they were taking about and a few different types of air cleaners available

run an air cleaner the car will run just fine with it.

I bought a high-boy air cleaner and put it on. A few days later I opened the hood to check the oil and noticed the high-boy was AWOL.
What the heck, I hadn't driven the A very much, but there it was, gone.
If there's a next time I'll put a safety chain or some other sort of retainer on so if'n it comes off it won't get lost.

Do you have engine pans installed? My air filter fell off once but was "saved" by the engine pan.

No engine pans, I'll have to look into at either getting a set or make some.

Paper air filters are great until they get a few drips of gas on them and burst into fire. Think about the road conditions when the Model A was new and the conditions today. I think my car will survive fine without a filter in my opinion. Now an oil filter is a different story unless you change every 500 to 700 miles.

Oil sprayed Hi-Boy K&N. My thought..... cleaner air, less chance of a backfire fire.
In service for about 6 years, remove, clean and reoil element with MMO once a year.
Just tighten the hose style clamps and it has stayed in place.
Engine runs well.

even some fine metal mesh, form it over the intake of the carb and then hose clamp it on. that will stop larger size junk from getting in there.

on my drag car i had to do that (different type engine).
the return lane was dirt and the slicks being sticky would throw rocks and dirt over the car towards the engine. the worry of something going into the engine. $$$$

Here are my K&N filters on 2 different engines. Both right hand drive. Both model B carbs.
As Arnold says a VERY tight fit. The adaptors are just rolled, folded and brazed.
Slip fit onto inlets and held by one of the two bolts that mount inlet to exhaust manifold on one engine and a bolt into the wiper vacuum port on the other, because it has an electric wiper not vacuum.
Plugs can run anywhere from lean white (too lean and burnt inlets valves!) To dark tan, depending on GAV settings.
Carbs are not air balanced. No need if filter is big enough and non-restrictive. I got the same result with a large paper filter, but prefer the washable oiled mesh type.
Our rallies always take us over the worst, dusty fire trails and logging roads. There is no way I want all that dust in motors!
I get a kick out of the know-alls at public showings. Some even explain to their friends that these were after-market Ford options. Some just tell me I have ruined the originality. Many tell me Ford designed the engines to eat the dust without any harm!!!
One guy berated me and insisted to his audience of 3 friends that I was washing the bores by being too rich. I pulled a plug to show him light tan electrodes.

An Air Maze keeps out the mice for me.Why does the paper filter cost more than the metal screen which is reusable.At Mike's paper is $20.25 and metal is $12.50 for just the filters.Notice the complete filter is "marked down ".

I have an Airmaze with the wire mesh screen. Does anyone know if there is a K&N filter that will fit the the Airmaze?

There may be a previous thread on it but I’m too lazy to look it up!

The one pictured in my post #35 fits the Air Maze filter but is much taller, ~5½" for more air flow. You will have to extend the center bolt. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
