Lifter + con rod info
greetings to all of you flatty guru's...two questions...do 60 horse and 85-90 horse v8 's use the same lifters and will 8ba connecting rods ( with the insert bearings ) work in a 59 ab with the 59ab crank?

Re: Lifter + con rod info
The lifters are smaller in diameter. The 8BA rods and bearings will fit the 59 crank, but it has one oil hole for both bearings. I wouldn't recommend it

Re: Lifter + con rod info
As Ron says, must use an 8 BA crank, and if it's a Merc crank, you must change Pistons as well.
But you can use 59AB rods(29A) and full floating bearings on an 8BA crank. |

Unless you know how to set up floaters, I'd stay away from them. Besides, they're very expensive.

Re: Lifter + con rod info
What Ron hasn't explained is that the oil hole in the big end journal is in the middle which is fine for the full floating bearings, but when you have two separate pairs of (lock in) bearings (side by side) on that journal the lube oil is effectively going to pee out between the two, and all you hard work and money is going to be wasted in short order.
That's why the crank that is designed for the lock in bearings has two holes, so that the oil enters at the centre of each bearing. |

Re: Lifter + con rod info
Rod side clearance is only .005/.0010 in a street engine so the single oil hole would probably work. I've know of several people that did this and so far haven't had any triouble?? However, this could lead to a bearing failure. One is in an old fire truck.

Re: Lifter + con rod info
I've disassembled 59 engines that had 8bA rods and locking bearings, Looked like they had a lot of miles, I wouldn't recommend it. Walt
