Re: 1948 Ford pops out of 2nd gear
When I was 18-20 yrs old I had to hold it in second on hills while listening to the duals pop. My arm didn't hurt then, but 60 years later it does. I still hold it in second. I still love the music.

Re: 1948 Ford pops out of 2nd gear
Popping out of second gear is the classic textbook case of "its worn out". Mac VP is always correct and you should read his post carefully. There is no single item or adjustment or quick fix to solve the actual problem. You need to rebuild the whole thing because the primary cause is the clearances in the cluster gear and most importantly, in the second gear spacer. You cannot get to these items without taking the entire thing apart.
Just my opinion. |

Re: 1948 Ford pops out of 2nd gear
Got the new bushings in on the shift levers on the transmission side case. 2nd/3rd gear lever bushing was really in poor condition. Took the car down the mountain where it was popping out of second and it stayed in gear. Will get the two bushings on the steering column changed this week. Thank you Mac Van Pelt for your advice! Bushings on column are missing. Just rubber grommets and washer so I think anything will be an improvement.
