34 speedo removal
How is the speedo removed on a 34 sedan? I must be missing something, don’t see how it’s secured.

Re: 34 speedo removal
The speedo has two ears with holes that are a bit offset from vertical. The dash has two threaded studs that fit through the holes and There are nuts and lockwashers holding the speedo ears to the threaded studs.

Re: 34 speedo removal
Tim, Not screws. Terry was correct, there are studs on the backside of the dash. The ears/tabs go over the studs, secured by a lock washer and nut.
Any time I've been in that area (35/36's) I've had to be on my back looking up under the dash.

Re: 34 speedo removal
Very Tangled, the tabs the arrows are pointing to?? The tabs on my speedo, a 46 someone installed, are not touching or connecting to anything.

Re: 34 speedo removal
I don’t know how much clearer I can say it….the tabs on the speedo in my dash ARE NOT CONNECTED TO ANYTHING….NOTHING….NO STUDS. I can’t see what the heck is holding it in!

Re: 34 speedo removal
Thanks for the clarification, Tim.
I guess the question seems to be "How is a 1946 speedo removed from a 1934 sedan?"

Re: 34 speedo removal
The rear of the 46 speedo looks like the 34, tabs included. It almost seems glued in. Nothing inside those holes either.

Re: 34 speedo removal
Be aware if you remove the speedo you may not have the two mounting studs for the 34 speedo since they could be cut off.

Re: 34 speedo removal
Yes Terry, I saw there’s only about an inch left of one stud. I’ll figure something out because I definitely want the correct speedo, the 46 looks horrendous.

Re: 34 speedo removal
I got the wrong speedo out, it WAS glued in. Now to get the remnants of whatever glue they used off. Only one stud is there to mount the speedo, have to figure out how to secure the other tab.

Re: 34 speedo removal
What a shame someone would do that to save a couple bucks. There is no shortage of 33, 34 speedometers, you just have to pay a little more for the nice ones

Re: 34 speedo removal
Re post 15….it looked like the stud was too short but once I got that wrong speedo out the stud turned out to be correct.

Re: 34 speedo removal
Yes Tim, I have followed the story. It seems to me that with such a nice car, I am guessing that a previous owner was too cheap to buy the correct speedo. And perhaps someone was not patient enough to remove the old speedo without twisting off the second stud, so chose to glue in whatever fit. All assumptions here, I mean no insults, please correct me if wrong. now the problem is, and again assuming, your car looks so good, I assume again that the dash is also very good, and to really fix the issue, you would need to weld on a new stud for the one that is missing, which would be bad news for a car with a nice woodgrain dash, again assuming... best wishes with your project....nice car !

Re: 34 speedo removal
cas3, thanks for the compliment. The gauge is so lightweight that one stud holds it in place fine as it is also supported by the way it sits in the dash opening. I put a strip of duct tape on the other side for a little more support. I may fashion a little bracket and connect the empty tab to one of the mounting bolts of the amp gauge.
