Default Front Oil Pan Crank Shaft Leak

The front oil pan/crank shaft cord seal is leaking. The pan is not a problem but the upper seal may be a problem. Any tricks to threading the cord up and around the shaft? I know chevy v8s were like this and am assuming its the same for the flatheads.

The upper seal is in the timing gear cover. Do as jetmek suggest above. You will need another timing gear cover gasket.

If he used forethought and just slathered the timing gear gasket (or any other gasket for that matter) with grease, say chassis lube even, he probably could get by with using the old gasket. (Gasket cement ain't your friend.") Ask me how I know.

New rope seals come impregnated. In addition to that, I boiled mine in hot motor oil. Messy, but inserts easily into the timing gear cover, jam it in as tight as it will go and then trim it to stand proud of the cover. It will smash itself flush as you reinstall the cover. Nothing wrong with old tech, it won’t leak on you.

What year engine and oil pan are you using? If it is pre-1949, a lot of the oil leaks/drips come from the front road-draft provision in the corner of the oil pan. They will usually drip some oil - and may in some cases fool the owner into thinking it is the front timing cover and the crankshaft seal. Just something to be aware of . . .
