Default Separating the transmission from the drviveshaft

I have a 1931 roadster frame with only the transmission, differential and rear axles, and radius rods installed. I have removed all the bolts that hold the universal joint to the driveshaft and cannot pull the two apart. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I worked on a 1930 AA that had that problem, and because the U-joint hadn't been greased in decades, it was rusted to the shaft. Had to get the joint red hot and start hammering on it.

Hi Tom: On several occasions you have replied to my questions. Thank you. I would try your suggestion of heat and hammer, but there is no place that I can get to the Universal joint to apply the heat. The inner cap cannot be pulled away to give me access. I have tried several very thin wedges to separate the inner cap from the joint housing, but to no avail. I'm fearful of cracking or breaking the edges of the inner cap.

Did you remove the single bolt "inside" the u-joint holding it to the output shaft on the back of the transmission?

The bolt inside is unobtainable until the drive shaft is released. Give it a lot of penatrant as it is rust welded in the splines.

Does it look well lubed, or do you see dry and possible rust holding it together?

Once the rear end is dropped and the outer clam shell is removed I haven't had problems with cars, but that dry rusted AA would slide back one inch then bind up tight. One inch was enough to get heat to the U-joint.

A perfect job for the flameless inductor with the universal wire

This might sound like a mute point but is the rear axle either spring or shackles removed to pull the axle rearward? Also, make sure your brake cross shaft isn't the problem with the torque tube on it. put two pry bars that will fit on each side and having someone pull from the rear and pry from the front on both sides it should come free.

Keep us posted on the outcome.

So the clam shell is completely off the car... Can you put the trans in 3rd gear and try to rotate the trans side to side while pulling? Might just need some jarring action. Try up and down too, mine needed to be wiggled off to get started then it just slid off like hot butter so be ready.

Maybe try squirting some (lots?) penetration oil in through the grease fitting hole?
