The car was running until a couple of months ago. It starts but then engine stalls and dies. What could be the problem area ? I retimed it thinking the problem could be with timing.

I have old Tillotson and untested Zenith carburetors. Changing to Zenith was even worse, backfire and not starting.

Check that the gas tank is being properly vented. It is vented through a hole in the gas cap and it may be plugged. Try running the car with the gas cap off.

Another thought. The fuel line from the tank could be partially plugged.

seems to run ok at idle.
loosen the line to the carb, if you have good gas flow to the carburettor then i would say the issue is inside the carb
lots of things it could be, but start with the inlet screen then the float valve. dirty?

I will second the advice of others. Start with checking the fuel flow to the carburetor. Then if that is OK, clean out the carburetor. It is possible that both carburetors need cleaning. If it is the carburetor, carburetor cleaner, available from auto parts stores, and a blast of air may be all that it needs.

Do all of the above and if that doesn't get it I would take the Zenith and clean as previously mentioned then install Snyders Gasket Set A9502-S - get two, cheap 1.50 each. Needle and seat A-9564-C 16.95 and use Carb rebuilding wrench A-9511 12.35. It is not likely that there is anything wrong with the jets other than trash. Take it apart once and this should do it for a long time.
