Elkpointe & Kawanee Green Paint

I want to thank those who did post information for my search for paint codes for these paints. I should hear from my PPG dealer shortly. When I did a search asking Model A Ford Kawanee Green I found many variations of this paint color. Everyone calls their paint Kawanee Green but they all can't be the same as what Ford furnished in 1930/1931.

On the website for the Long Island Model A Ford Club, there is an "Album" showing club member cars. Picture #8 of #19 is a 1931 Slant Windshield Cabriolet. In my opinion, it is a wonderful picture of the colors Kawanee and Elkpointe green. But, maybe this is not a close original representation of these colors and I am just chasing fake colors. I would like to hear opinions from you on how original these colors are.

If I find paint codes that I am satisfied with from PPG I will put them on Ford Barn. It would be nice to update the various color paint codes for the new urethane paint systems. Ed

Ed, I have stated this over and over both here and to my customers, that the ONLY benchmark that matters as far as authenticity is concerned is if your vehicle's color matches what is in the Paint & Refinish Manual. It truly matters not if it does not match what Ford originally produced, because in MAFCA competition, that color chip is the benchmark by which your color will be compared to. FWIW, when MAFCA came out with their 3rd Revision of the P&RG book, the MARC JSC did not adopt that revision. Therefore, unless it has been adopted within the past year or so by the MARC JSC, then because the Stds only state what the color is without showing the color, then there is a little wiggle room there for color variation when in MARC competition.

Brent, thank you for your comment. I do have the Model A Ford Paint & Finish Guide and in the case of Kawanee and Elkpointe colors, the chips are very dark with little difference between them. Maybe it is because the chips are so small. Some of the other colors are easier to make out. It is a shame that they aren't a bit bigger so that they could be scanned to match a color. Maybe I am looking for something that never existed. Thanks again for your help. Ed

I believe my car to be originally kewanee green. I made my paint my self from cheap paint shop options and mixed with colors I had. And missed the mark by miles. I am ok with that for now. Mine is no show car. I have seen it though. In my stripping process I found the origional paint. Your photo link did not work for me. I'll look around and give my opinion on what it should look like.

I have painted a number of 30/31 with Elkpoint & Kewanee Green. I use a sherwin Williams 2nd dimension single stage. It is excellent and is a perfect match to the JSC paint & refinsh guide.

One issue you have with the Paint Manual is so many chips on a WHITE background.

Use a piece of black paper, cut out a square the size of the chip, place the paper over the chip.

You'll be surprised how different the chip looks. Try it.

I had an Elkpoint / Kew. car painted in the early '70's in Ditzler orig.nitro lacquer, and by memory, the colors were very close together and subdued, more like in post 5 side view.

Totally agree.
I'm sure glad someone posted that tip many years ago, because I was also fooled by the white background.
I picked a light and dark green from a paint color chart to paint a steam engine I built. After getting the paint, I had to add a lot of black to darken the colors.

BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're sedan is the first I've seen that matches Sarah, right down to the Apple Green wheels.

I have ben "told" that my Town Sedan in Kewanee Green and Elkpoint Green but it seems darker than other examples I have seen.

Each person's computer's monitor may give a different "shade" of the color(s). FWIW

I have seen Larry's Elkpoint and Kewanee on a Victoria and it is an exact match to the paint and refinish guide. Can someone post a picture of Elkpoint and Kewanee with black wheels? It appears the wheel colors trick my eye to the overall appearance of those colors.

This is our '30 Tudor in Elkpointe and Kewanee, it was painted about 1979 using Ditzler lacquer, from the paint code Ditzler had for these colors back then.
Looks a little different summer or winter also, differences in the lighting.
The single lady with the car is also a 1930 model.

Also, a picture of a 1930 Town Sedan that was done in 1977, using the same colors. This car was my fathers, but he sold it in the early 80's. I have seen it a few times since. It was a MARC of Excellence winner at the Dearborn nationals in 1978. This picture was taken at the Oshkosh, Wisconsin nationals in 2012. The current owner has been enjoying the car, and I believe has over 100k miles on it. I've got a picture of it here somewhere from the Dearborn show, I'll see if I can find it.

Here are two pictures of the same Lombard Blue paint chip. The one on the left has the white background from the paint chip book. The one on the right has a black background. Both were done in full sunshine. The camera did just what your eyes will do. That is to let in less light (close down the iris) when there is a bright background and open up when there is a dark background.

I noticed some of our cars have the Kewanee Green on top and some with the Elkhorn Green on top. Both look good to me but it got me to wondering, which way was/is 'correct'?? Or does it matter?

Mine definitely looks darker in the shade...

On my 31 cabriolet the lighter color is on the bottom, darker on top. It depends on the body style. The answers are in the Model A Paint and Finish Guide. If you are going to paint a car it is a must to have. It is more than just color chips. It has charts to show you which parts of the car get what color, how to put on the pin stripe and written descriptions on what is buffed out and what is left as painted. Ed

When it comes to Kewanee Green, it's the wheels that seems to differ alot. My Apple Green are lighter than these.

As far as the upper and lower body color goes, as to which is lighter, and which is darker, it seems to me that the earlier Judging Standards (late 70's?) stated that after a certain date in early 1930, the color scheme was reversed, and the light/dark colors were flip-flopped for this color combination. I'm not sure the Judging Standards indicate this any longer. Both the '30 Tudor I have, and the '30 Town Sedan that my father owned, were both early '30 cars, and were restored at within a a couple of years of each other.

Here is my version. Used the color chips in the paint manual to get as close as I could working with the folks at the local English Color store. And then, at the end of the day, I went with what I thought was the best looking since I'm the one living with it every day. Still needs the straw striping to complete the job. And whether to go with the white walls!

Two colors that "ain't no where close" to original are chicle and copra. I saw an original car several years ago and the JS guide is just not it. I have never seen original elk & kew but would be interested in comments if anyone has.

Brent is correct.....goose-step to the JS in all matters if you are showing a car. Otherwise, please yourself (my suggestion!!)
