What did you do working on you Model A today
Over on Garage Journal they have a running post about what you did in your garage today, some interesting stuff there. Thought I would start something like that here, but just keep it to Model A work. I'll start with a short intro. I have 4 As a '29 coupe, '29 CCPU, '31 AA LWB and a '31 Budd cab SWB that I am presently restoring. Today worked on the body which is near the final preparations for paint, and and painted the headlight buckets black. Nearing the one year point on the restoration.

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
Nothing Model A today. I've been working on my other restoration (not Ford). Once that is done, I'll move it on and concentrate on my Model As.

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
Changed out the bearings in my transmission and put it back together. 105 outside and about 99 in the garage. Spent a lot of time looking for the tools we used a couple of days ago to replace the head on a friends 1930 Coupe. I have 3 A's. 1929 Tudor that I made into a de luxe delivery with the original metal and parts found throughout the states. It has been with my son-in-law for 10 years getting painted. No progress in the last 9. I also have two I trade off as daily drivers, a 29 roadster and a 31 de luxe coupe. Both of those run well with strong engines. I'm getting a tranny together for the coupe and when it is done I hope to have delivery of an overdrive to add to it. Then I will have my hands full in my shop, as it takes me forever to get stuff done anymore. Probably take me four good days to change out the differential and tranny for the one with overdrive and a rebuild of a spare tranny. Old one in the coupe howls in low and second, is fine in third.

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
Getting my body back down on the frame on my 29 Tudor haven't quite figured out how I'm going to tighten those nuts on the rear end of the frame. Floor boards in front are out and so is the one in front of passenger seat. I guess if I can put seat belts in myself I should be able to handle a small job getting the mount bolts in.

My tranny sounded like a broken down threshing machine when I bought my Model A, and every part except a couple rollers on that bearing looked like NOS. I was really surprised at how much noise a couple bad rollers could make on that little roller bearing. |

I actually walked by the front floor mat draped across the small divider wall between us neighbors and thought about reinstalling it. Then thought better knowing that just like last week, if I were to replace it in the car I would need to remove it for a different trouble.

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
Yesterday I put the 29 on 4 jack stands, adjusted all the brakes. Much better now. Went for a good country drive, and ended up checking out a 28 roadster that a friend just picked up. Supposed to rain all day today, so clean up the shop it is, right after making the bed, doing dishes and laundry. Life is Great. Jeff

Today or maybe tomorrow I may finish cleaning up the shop from the last time I worked on the 31 about a week ago. These things must be planned carefully.

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
Just finished replacing the Universal Joint. First time in a Model A. Not an easy job without a lift. Bumper jacks...jack stands...wood blocks. At times I think Pop and I are nuts. Holy cow, you have to get that thing up high to get that rear spring to clear. But, we got it.

On my way to work this morning, I stopped by the A and connected the electrical wiring to the starter and filled the new steering box with oil. I'm partway through a steering column upgrade and ducking the heat of the afternoon is high on the priority list.

I am on vacation this week (not working at the office). Today I am working on the distributor of my Station Wagon frame (1930 Station Wagon Restoration). Next I need to take the oil pan out and clean it, in preparation to starting the engine.

Messing around with a mandrel to enlarge the bore of a babbitted rod using TimeSaver. The goal is to take a 0.030 under rod to 0.025 under for use on a 0.020 under crankpin that got scuffed up and was taken down to 0.025 under. We'll see how it goes.

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
I installed a "Steering Housing End Plate with Tube" http://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/st...sing-end-plate to (hopefully) stop the steering box oil from filling up my light switch. That turned out to be a fun job. Somewhere in the past, someone installed a freeze plug in the end of the steering box to prevent it from leaking. Then they proceeded to drill a hole in the freeze plug for the horn rod to pass thru, defeating the purpose of the freeze plug... I had to remove the drivers side engine pan so I could use my slide hammer to remove the freeze plug.
Also while I had the engine pans out and was under the car I tapped the frame where the engine pans mount to make it a one man job to R&R them next time. All back together and Hot Damn, no leak (so far). Last edited by Y-Blockhead; 06-20-2017 at 10:16 PM. |

Worked the screen out of the fuel tank and unmoored the cork from the sludgy bottom,so now I have a fuel gauge...and can use the solvent sprayer to clean the tank once i drain it.Drained the cooling system to see why it overheats..timing dead on,no bubbles in the water when running but an ominous sign hit me in the face the last 'block go round'..no windshield frame and when the repop quail 1/4 turn radiator cap popped open it misted me with hot water...and grass..poked around the baffle and found more grass wedged in the top tank...hoping a good backflush will cure my issue..

I vacuumed the bugs out of the radiator ,with the help of a tooth pick.
Then got under to see if I have any oil leaks. ,no real leaks just a small drop, found on the floor sometime. Next cleaned front window (bugs) and put on rainex. Next opened a beer lite up a cigar sat on a chair and looked at the car. THE END Fred |

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
Today I disassembled the transmission tower (after building a spring keeper removal tool) and continued with the carb overhaul. Although the speedometer shows about 5000 miles, judging by the wear on the shift lever and the forks, I'm thinking that's not quite accurate.

I took the hood and radiator off my coupe. I found tiny cracks at the corners of the tabs where the center hinge tube goes through. There were several so I flattened them out and MIGged and ground them. I'm going to paint the coupe so everybody get ready for some paint and body work questions.

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
Did the final touches on putting Bonnie back together after putting in the correct tappets (actual solid '32 tappets) for the B cam I installed a year ago. I had the skinniest base (0.990" aftermarket adjustable) tappets riding on the B's lobes which Henry redesigned for a 1.187" base on a solid lifter. Believe me, grinding valve stems to get the right lash is pure joy.
With a full time job, she went back together slowly, and tonight, I reinstalled the front bumper, splash apron, and hood. My short wife had fun reaching over the hood with a screw driver whilst I spun the nuts on the two bolts from under the dash for the back hood bracket.

I worked on headlight/cowl light problems. Have most fixed with one to go. Main problem was the passenger headlight was very dim. I took the bucket off and removed some paint on the headlight bar for a better ground. That solved the worst of the issues. I'll try to fix the last issue tomorrow.

Today I put the last hub on the rear end for my '31 Coupe project. Rear end now completely rebuilt minus spring. Got out rear wheels, already painted, and hopefully will get tires on them tomorrow. Soon I will be able to roll that rear end under the chassis. Wet here today in Kiwi. Happy motoring.

Fixed the knocking noise at start up. Turns out the dipper tray in the pan had pin holes in it, so no oil to rods at start up. Soldered hole, checked bearing clearance, all is well. I'm relieved and happy, the engine is happy, no leaks, all is well.

I finally got the body off the Roadster and pressure washed the frame, engine and tranny, looks good. The body well that's another story, I will have to breakdown and buy a drivers rear quarter. looks like a tree fell on it the upper revile is gone the other side may be fixable if a good one is used as a pattern it's not hurt as bad.

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
'31 Budd cab AA. Well I worked on the windshield the last couple of days, about the only thing I have never done with an A. First was soaking the screws on the frame with Kroil so they would come loose and then taking the top off of the frame. The glass was really stuck in place and I didn't want to bend the frame removing it. Tom on the board suggested using kroil, an oil I use all the time, I sprayed the junction of the frame and the gasket last night, this morning the glass about fell out. Now to clean it up and prepare for paint and decide where I'll get the glass for the CCPU. Things are moving along nicely. Yesterday the weather was nice without rain so I took my '29 CCPU for a ride, life is good...

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
Started my 30 which has been sequestered in the garage for the last 6-7 months. Started right up and ran well. Noticed the fuel shut off valve under the dash has leaked a little. Guess I'll have to repair it, are the available repair kits worth it or just replace the whole valve? Thanks and happy 4th to all of you. I was in the Navy during the transition from sail to steam..

rebuilt the seat riser and made new wood for the cab where the seat back attaches to. Rebuilt a distributor and installed it on the AA. Finished prep for the interior to be painted, still fine sanding and getting the exterior ready for paint. Getting closer all the time..

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
I'm convinced God is watching out for me. I was under the car checking it out for the upcoming ride to Gettysburg, and noticed the rear spring center bolt nut had snapped off. My initial plan was to lower the axle and spring and see if I could draw the spring together with a long bolt, clamp it, replace the long bolt with the regular square head bolt, yada yada, while the spring was still attached to the axle under the car. But I soon realized that was not going to be a comfortable and safe working condition, so I removed the spring. As I was tapped out the last shackle, the spring fell over with the shackle still part way in the eye, and son of a gun the shackle broke in two when the spring hit the floor. Well I looked at it more closely, and only half of the crack was clean and new. The other half of the crack was dirty and greasy, indicating it had been cracked for some time already. That could have been a real bad situation had that shackle let go on the road.
So I'm convinced God snapped off that spring center bolt were I could easily see it so that I would eventually find the cracked shackle that was not obviously damaged just by a cursory look at it. |

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
Last night i replaced the choke rod bushings and leather washer on my 29, Tudor. It has been rattling and vibrating out of adjustment. I found it had some sort of metal permabushing 'thing' mounted in the upper bracket. Not sure what that was about. Pullet it and put it in a baggie incase it was important.
Next up? Remove the column mounted starter button and replace it with a proper foot switch. Waiting on some replacement screws for various trim bits. |

Today I will replace the fuel line, install rebuilt generator, Flush Rust 911 from the cooling system, and attempt to get the lights working (if my parts arrive).

Here is something you guys might check. On the front spring, those two brackets that clamp on the leaves to keep them straight and in line can get loose. Mine were loose and a friend lost his and his leaves splayed out. Just something to look at.

Pulled the engine. Two guys from the local club offered to help. Actually, they did an awesome job and I felt like I was along for the learning experience and they were really the ones doing all the work. The project started as me having a need to replace the clutch. One thing leads to another....
Awesome folks here in the club I am the newcomer. More to follow, I am sure. -Bill G |

After having poor braking on my 1928 Standard Roadster I decided to check the brake drums on my lathe. I skimmed all four, refitted them and now she brakes like a modern car.

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
At the Mid-Atlantic Swap Meet in Lurray this past May , found a Sparton horn that needed restoring and some parts to do it. Re wound the field coils for 12 Volt and painted it with new gaskets, hardware etc. Another part of the restoration done.. Tomorrow hope to paint the interior of the cab. Putting the truck back to its original color Rock Moss Green, my '29 CCPU is the same color. At the swap meet also purchased a very good pair of front fenders, starting to block sand and fixing the very minor imperfections, maybe primer in a couple of weeks.. Life is good when you are driving a Model A!

What did I do? Well further disassembly of my red wheeled coupe to paint and cleanup the frame a little. Gee, it didn't seem too bad at first, in 15 minutes the sweat was flowing like Niagra. Well so what! I've been sweaty before! I managed to get the RF fender off after much agita.

Got out of the hospital today, realize that Afib is back and it may just be time to unload a few unfinished projects to a new home. Spent 24 hours mulling things over and figure the time has come. Enjoy what I have running and part with the rest of the someday................ thoughts. The Delivery goes first.

Yesterday I finished installing my new spring, shackles and bushing on the front end. Painted the axle and degreased the front end a little bit. I also put the first coat of color on the last couple of wheels. Going to try and get a second coat on all 6 wheels today.

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
Rebuilt bell housing for badly worn pedal shaft and pedal bushings as well as bushings on the clutch release shaft. In fact, the one of the old bushings on the clutch shaft had actually come loose in half and was completely out of the bore. No wonder there was a lot of slop!
Driving the pin out of the pedal shaft was a bugger. Got it all done. Clutch release shaft bushings needed no reaming, but the pedal bushings both needed reaming. ~BG |

painted the interior on the '31 CCPU Budd Cab AA SWB yesterday, looks great. Today worked on putting in the seat back support wood and the instrument panel. Picked the best looking speedo I had, cleaned and oiled it and vfy that it worked. After a couple of hours working on the AA, wife and I took the '29 CCPU for a ride on the Blue Ridge Pky and a BBQ dinner.

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
Lucky Stripe Garage, You are happy with those mounting parts? Not to be a picky PITA, but if it were mine, I would want at least one gusset on those upper brackets and I'd want to use a piece of angle iron, not a piece of !/4" bar stock, bent to 90 deg. Jist Sayin' Get some other opinions, but I think there's a chance that might straighten its self out my the end of the first year.
Good luck! Terry |

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
installed stainless steel sleeves in the center barrels of SW sedan with doors removed from car for new stock type vendor's hinge pins. With no lathe available, etc. we used 5/16" stain. steel thin wall pipe reamed to 9/32" to suit and barrels drilled with 5/16" jobbers bit before placing sleeves using undersize pin as a driving guide. Fussy finesse work needing 2 people and to protect paint, but doors are super tight! A slight taper was needed on pin ends and grind the serrations very slightly then dipped in 600 wt. oil and knock them in.

Changed the oil, and lubed the beast. it only had about 300 miles on the old oil but I had the time and energy to do it today.
It really helped that I bought a window air conditioner for the garage, it made it a pleasant experience for a change. |

I thought about changing the old air in my tires that was put in back when Henry breathed that oxygen with new fresh humid air of today. But I thought of the anteek value of that air and decided against it.

I inherited a 1930 Model A from my grandpa. I got to take it home this weekend and start working on it -- the radiator isn't flowing properly and it overheats quickly. Hopefully it's just full of grease. Anyway, I hope to have it back on the road this fall after this and a few other repairs!

Wait! WHAT?? Your Afib goes away? And comes back??
My Afib is 24/7. Takes ALOT longer to get anything done these days... What did I do today? I installed the radiator back in my Town Sedan for the second time this week due to a persistent leak in the overflow tube... Looks like I got it this time. Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
Went to help a lady that bought a coupe out of Tx on Ebay. She told me it ran perfectly and the man drove it off his trailer and drove it around with her, showing her how it worked. The next day he left back to Tx and she decided to go for a drive. Started the car and drove the half mile to her gate and it quit running several times so they got it home finally and parked in front of their house. Noticed a big puddle of oil in her driveway. Tried several times since to start it and eventually in a round a bout way I was asked to come see if I could help.
Nice looking, older restoration, the oil read a bit high on the stick, a few rust flakes in the glass bowl coming through the firewall, but not too bad. I sat in it chatting with her and asked if it was okay if I stated it. She agreed and I turned the key on and touched the foot starter and it started immediately. I then turned the GAV about two or three turns until that was closed and backed it out to a good steady idle, about 1/4+ turn. Then I took a friend and we drove it toward her gate. About there it died, obviously starved for fuel, we finally got the gas cap off and drove it back to her house. we found just setting the cap on the neck would starve it into dying. We left the cap off and again parked in her driveway and shot the bull for a bit. then we pushed the car backward after it had sat there for 5 or 10 minutes and there was an oil spot the size of my hand on the ground under the rear of the engine. My plan now is to have a pencil filter installed in the shut off after all the gasoline is drained, remove a quart of oil, filter the fuel and put it back in, cure the plugged vent in the cap and drive it again. May have to wash out the carb. What else do you see needs done from what I presented? Engine was rebuilt in St. Louis less than 700 miles back, the story goes. |

Somewhere in the vehicle history a "door-glass" had been replaced with plexi-glass, and the passenger door glass had a crack.. so while the interior is in the planning stages, window regulators and felt guides will be replaced, and new glass is cut for install. Today is door regulator day.!!

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
8-11-17 placing a new flange/bead on an otherwise great fender, It looks like they used the fender playing bumper cars, but the flange took all the abuse, the rest of the fender is in great shape. The old fix was old school lead that I wish I could of saved, but the bead was really destroyed and cut in multiple places, you would get dizzy looking down it, and decided a replacement was in order. I learned body work with lead back in the 50s, but this was too far gone and would never be strong. The replacement bead fits good and if I didn't run out of MIG gas it would be done. Still block sanding on the body, getting close to paint time! This '31 AA is a put together from parts without a title, turned in the paperwork to the VA DMV and waiting for the inspector to come and affix an assigned Vehicle ID tag, so I can apply for title and tags. It is a driver so I am not worried about matching numbers etc, just happy to save it from the scrap heap. just passed one year working on it...

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
Howdy boys, over the last few weeks I have installed an engine in a '29 model A snowbird and drove it around my field (that was fun!). Last week a club member called and asked if I could repair the seized up differential in his '30 coupe, so, reluctantly, I said yes. He had taken it to a local repair shop, they checked the rear end oil level, EMPTY! Uh oh. The shop didn't want to deal with a model A rear end, so I got the call.
I pulled it on to my trailer and took it home. Since the tires didn't screech pulling it on the trailer I thought I'd see if it would drive off. It did! I drove it in the shop, pulled the rear drums off and found the right E. brake was soaked with oil/grease. Cleaned it and the drum up, with brake cleaner, put the drum back on, filled the rear end with oil, and away she went! No damage to the diff! What luck for me! I've rebuilt a few, and it always takes more time than I think it should. And, I usually have to call Jim Brierley to help me out, since I tend to forget how to do things on occasion. Fixed the horn on this rig too, as it had a wire shorting to the conduit. Damn that's hot! I still have the blister! That poor rig needs a lot more work done to it, but, it'll have to wait until I get at least one of my Overlands running! |

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
Fixed a problem that has been plaguing me since I bought the car a couple months ago. Front-end had a nasty low-speed shimmy to it. Sometimes the only way to get it snapped out of it was to speed up to over 25.
Already checked toe-in and the wishbone, king pins and just about everything else I could think of, except for maybe the most obvious. The Pittman arm was seemingly tight, but closer look revealed that while the nut looked tight, it had a definite wobble to it from around the shaft. Quite a bit, actually. I really had to reef on it to get it tight, but no more shimmy. Not even a hint! |

Magicbox51. I had exactly the same on my '28 Roadster. A very nasty shimmy at certain speeds. Tightened the pitman arm and no more shimmy!!!!

Yesterday I swapped out the gear oil in the transmission, the Borg Warner, and the banjo. I noticed right off the bat that gear changes were a lot more smooth. Im going to take the car out today to see if I can master the downshift.

Re: What did you do working on you Model A today
Have had an annoying rattle from under the hood . I think I traced it to the throttle link rod touching the GAV rod sleeve . Delicately bent the Tilly throttle arm for a clearance . No time for a test run today so it will be tommorrow (this is one word I am never sure if I spell it right !!! )
