Default What Windshield Wiper for '29 Special Coupe?

I know it's not vacuum, but is the correct wiper electric or hand? Date on the firewall is August 3, 1929. And who was (were) the original manufacturer(s) of these? Thanks!

Expecting rain in Oregun,
Mike

I don't know what my June '29 regular coupe had. Now it just has a bunch of holes & NO plumbing, which doesn't mean much, as the cowl was replaced in it's unknown past. I'll be installing a later Trico replacement & I have all new, proper plumbing. Anyone have a donor motor to sell, I'm missing the on/off sliding valve & all the parts above it, including the cover & screws. Bill W. (29er, sorry I stole your thread, I'm DESPARATE! Will I go to JAIL?)

Thanks Tiny! Just what I was looking for. I also ran across this note:

"Beginning in February, 1929 Ford began using electric wipers supplied by Heinze Electric Company and in March 1929, added wipers from E.A Labratories. There were two variations of the Heinze wiper but only one E.A"

Bill: No Problem! We gotta get Vermin up and scootin', but I thought FRESNO is in the desert where it never rains(?)... especially now that Gov Moonbeam has declared a State Emergency because of the drought. Good luck with your tomato crop this year!

29,
Our valley was originally a SEMI-ARID desert, but with average rainfall of 10", canals from the Delta Region, & water from the Sierra snowfall, stored in lakes & reservoirs to feed our irrigation systems, we are known as "THE FOOD BASKET OF THE NATION"! We raise the largest VARIETY of food crops of any area in the WORLD!

I have July 17, 1929 Tudor with an original vacuum wiper on it. If you look at the holes in your windshield you'll get an idea of what was there originally, unless somebody over the years added holes as necessary. Marco has also been doing more recent research on this. Summer of 1929 seems to have been a transition time for wipers from electric to vacuum.

Thanks Ray! With so many manufacturers, models within manufacturer and styles (manual, electric or vacuum), there would indeed be material for a definitive study. I looked again at Marco's site but did not find a discussion of wipers there. Has he published elsewhere on this? Most of what I can find in the old "Restorer" magazines are on rebuilding rather than evolution. As you suggest, I'll check the hole arrangement, but without knowing the configuration of specific types of wipers, it won't answer my question until I'm able to dig a little deeper into the literature. Hmmm... forecast is for continued snow, so what else have I got to do?

Thanks again!
Mike

Check out this thread: Marco has a chart in Post #4 that may help.

Thank you, Ray,
That helps, my winshield has numerous holes & I'm sure it must have ben a vacuum one. I keep forgetting to check the fit of my Trico Replacement to the existing holes. My cowl apparently came from a car with electric wipers, since there was NO plumbing. The intake manifold DOES have a plugged vacuum port.

great job MARCO. I am pretty sure the trico vacuum wiper is correct for your car you could also look at the judging standards .BUT remember there is a three month leeway were older parts car still could be in production(hope this helps)

I think I owe somebody tuition! Wow, Thanks Carl, JM and Ray. And Marco. After checking Marco's diagram against my car I determined the original wiper was indeed electric. And like Bill's "Vermin", my car doesn't have the "plumbing" for a vacuum-type wiper. Perhaps there is no way of knowing the manufacturer since my coupe was assembled during late summer 1929 (a transition period as Ray and JM said) and Heinz, Owen-Dyneto and others were all installed by Ford.

Many Thanks!
Mike

Mot just sent me a message informing me that coupes had electric wipers well into 1930. I didn't know that! Now I'll have to do some research into whether my 29 business coupe had electric or vacuum originally.

Where are you located in Oregon, Mike?

So, my windshield, with a mess of holes, must have came from a totally different car?? OH WELL! At least I'll have a wiper that works & be LEGAL.

700RPM,

What month is your '29 B-coupe again ? My mid Feb B-coupe, which does not have quarter windows was and is an electric wiper car. The manifold also did not have a port for the vacuum line. That manifold set is not currently installed, as I found an Autolite Heater manifold many years ago. However it was necessary in SW Ohio for a daily driver.
