Metal Felt glass retainer replacement

Hello everyone,

I noticed today that the front metal felt glass retainer inside my passenger door has rusted off leaving just the top part which is spot welded from the inside of the door shell.

Does anyone have any experience removing and replacing these? I'm looking for some advice on how to tackle them the right way. I'm thinking I can just grind the spot welds with a die grinder to free the old retainer and then tack weld the new one in its place where the spot welds were.
