Default More steering column questions

Good evening everyone, I have a couple of questions on rebuilding my steering column.

1 On the sector gear section there is a grease fitting. Do I leave that there
even though I am not putting grease back in but putting oil in the gear?

2 Is it worth my time to take it to a machine shop and have them counter bore
the sector gear section to be able to install a modern oil seal?

Thanks in advance!

Default Re: More steering column questions

I can answer the first question. The grease fitting was removed late in the production of the Model A and replaced with a standard pipe plug. If you want to keep the car original, then use the grease fitting, but a pipe plug is a better solution in my mind as it eliminates confusion as to what to place in the steering box. Oil should be used and not grease. I use 85W-140 G5.

I cannot answer the second question. I think that is up to you. You may be able to just use an O ring.

Are you referring to the grease fitting on the sector shaft housing? If so I would leave it and use it. (See page 181 of service Bulletins).

If you are asking about the one where you fill the steering box, it doesn't really matter but I would remove it and install a ⅛" pipe plug.

I use the "o" ring kit and Penrite Steering Box Lube.
