Default At my age why do I bring these things home?

Friend called me, wanted to know if I wanted a flathead out of 1949 truck, before it goes to salvage yard. Why do I do this?

Because you can't help yourself - you hate to see a potentially good engine get scrapped.

Also, you have a "flathead sickness" - it is usually un-diagnosed and un-treatable by any modern medical science. Regardless of what Fauci might say or recommend . . .

For free how could you say no ! Truck motors had stellite valve seats, the oil pan
with rear sump and clean out lid. 5 blade fan...maybe the trans had a hogs head,
I'm giddy and not even part of the deal.

Would have been a shame to send that to scrap, so you did a good thing.

Not sure of your age, but I'm 51. My friend and I pulled 4 motors and another truck load of parts out of basement this past Sunday. Another load from a different source of blocks and parts is coming in shortly.

I don't have an answer to your question, but I've got the same sickness.

You bet I'd have brought that engine home too. It might be in better condition (not seized) than the one in the 49 Mercury truck in my yard. And that truck is not a whole lot older than me.

Hell, I'm 79 and seriously downsizing, but I would have brought that home in a heartbeat. I can fit another engine under the stairs. If the block is good (and I've found the more complete an engine is the better chance it has of being crack-free), that's a major score. Nobody's mentioned the transmission yet, but that's also a valuable part.

You have the disease like the rest of us. I search Craigs List & Facebook daily looking for flathead related items. I would have taken that in a heartbeat!

Could that be a later engine than '49? I'm not really up on '49's and trucks, but the cylinder head on that has the 3 separate mounting bolts for the oil filter. I was of the impression that '49's had the filter mounted on the actual head bolts.

Is there a date code stamped on the rear of the intake manifold surface?

I'm turning 90 and I just bought a basically complete V8 60HP with the transmission attached. Nice basically clean engine except it is very dusty, but I'm gonna love cleaning it up for display only. I just need a correct generator with correct fan attached to make it 100% complete. We never stop do we?? LOL

I want to thank everyone for the very thoughtful replies. When I saw that complete engine sitting in the corner, I made an offer to purchase the engine, knowing I was not letting it go to salvage.
Downsizing is very difficult. After losing two close friends in the past few years with large collections, and seeing first-hand how hard it was to help their wives downsize. I do not want to leave behind a burden for my wife and others. so, far the plan has not worked, LOL.
About the engine, I will clean it and try to find a date code on the intake. Does not appear to have every being apart. Transmission is a four speed, I Think. I had to put it on the engine stand, no room under the shelves, three others in the way.
BTY, I am 75 years young, looking for 76. And no cure for flathead disease or vaccine?
Thanks again
Bob

I did the same thing earlier this summer.. guy had a 48 or so F2 he was making yard art out of.. Said if I pulled the motor without damaging the truck, it was free for the taking. Had to load up my cherry picker and sheet of 3/4" plywood on my trailer so I had something to roll the cherry picker on as the truck was in his back yard. Brought my Dewalt sawsall I had just gotten not long before and two batteries.. Had to cut the exhaust pipe and the motor mount bolts off with the sawsall and wore both batteries out.. had to finish the second mount bolt with a hammer and chisel.. Out it came, left the transmission behind, a heavy 4 speed like the one you show..

I dragged a 1CM home last month because despite it being in a 50 Mercury for years with missing spark plugs it has a rebuilt tag rivited on the block so I took a chance for $100 and because there is a crack free 8BA on my stand it is now on the floor. In my junk garage there are 2 more cores, an EAB and another 1CM also without cracks. Now I'm wondering, where the hell did they come from? I know my 8BA came from a 50 Ford at the local landfill so I raced out with a tractor with a front end loader and ripped it out. Crack free so it was a great save. I know I had another EAB but it was riddled with cracks so I parted it out and scrapped the block.
Is there a Flathead Anonymous around where I can sit and tell everybody I got a problem?

You do not have a problem... You are the cure. I can't wait to order some of them stickers about flathead search and rescue. I bought a couple of t shirts from those guys but the logo is in the back and I need suspenders to hold my pants up and the X on the back covers the flathead logo. Gonna get enough stickers for all of my nine running vehicles.

I have to stop hanging around all you Flathead guys! Really! Now I am thinking I may have to keep my eye out for a flat head V8! Dont know a thing about them. I do know a little about there off spring, the Y Block. I fell in love with the sound of a friends two tone green 56 Ford Victoria, cruising up the road, when I was about 16. Haven't been right since. Shortly after that I found my wife to be. And things have been in constant turmoil since then!
Wishing all of you the best in Ford Land!
Regards,
Chris
