1949 head light switch removal
is there a trick to taking the head light switch out of the dash on a 1949 F1? after unscrewing the nut that holds the switch in, whats the trick at removing the knob to get it thru the dash hole?......is there a clip or button on the switch to remove the shaft?, or does the knob just pull off the stem to allow the shaft to go thru the dash hole.

There's a button on the bottom of the switch. Push it in and pull on the knob. The knob and shaft come out as a unit.

51/52 have a button. 48-50 have a small slot on the bottom side - push a small screw driver into it to release the shaft.

Re: 1949 head light switch removal
if you look up at the bottom of the light switch
you will see a small slot near the front of the switch put a small screwdriver in the slot and twrist slightly and turn the knob a little to the leaf and pull, it should come out of the switch with the shaft attached |

Here is a picture of the switch (shown upside down) and the small brass "tab" that must be depressed. Once the "tab" is depressed the knob can be turned about 1/4 turn to the left and released.

Re: 1949 head light switch removal
I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to add, after removing the light switch in my '48 F1, that the slot to put a screwdriver in, is on the drivers side of the switch. The tab is pushed to the rear of the switch (towards the firewall), then the shaft can be turned a quarter turn +/-, and pulled out. Then the bezel can be easily unscrewed by hand.
