Default Snyders H/C Head & Gasket

Looking at a Snyders 5.5:1 Head.
On their site they state: "You must use the 1932-34 "B" style head gasket with this cylinder head. U.S.A."

The gasket part numbers they list: B-6051-C (Graphite)
B-6051-X (Copper)

They don't say who the mfg. is for these gaskets.
Are these "Best" gaskets and if so which ones are they?

I would also consider a Brumfield 5.9:1 head if I could find one that someone bought for a project but never installed it.

Thanks,
Bob

I have their 'B' gasket on my 5.5 and it is still running fine after 8K on it.

My take on this- I do not like the graphite gaskets-3 have failed- I use ONLY the proper copper gaskets with copper spray! No Failure with many miles. Not sure on the manufacturer.

Seems our opinions are as varied on gaskets as on oil.

Bob, the Best Gaskets #573G is the Graphtite gasket for the Snyder's head. The Best Gasket #573C is the copper gasket.

Maybe Snyder's has their own numbers? Best to call them direct.

I have mentioned this before, it would be nice if the vendors would list the manufacturers name in the catalogs so we know who made the parts (not just gaskets, but all parts).

Bert's does mention it is a Best Gasket https://parts.modelastore.com/show_Product.asp?ID=3497 but uses the same 6051 number.

Another choice is the "Premium" head gasket with a solid steel core "sandwiched by a heavy-duty density gasket material coated with silicone. Additional high temperature silicone bands surround all water passages. Install with no additional sealants!"

My experience with this gasket for the Snyder 5.5:1 HC head has been disappointing. The gasket failed after about 5000 miles, causing coolant to leak into the cylinders (#1 and #2). My diagnosis was based on mayonnaise-like glop inside the oil filler cap and whitish smoke from the exhaust. A leak-down test revealed leakage into the radiator. When I removed the head I had to scrape remnants of the gasket off both the head and block. When I talked to Bert's, they told me they no longer recommend that gasket because of "too many reports of failure".

I replaced the gasket with the copper Best as mentioned above, and will not be using the "Premium" head gasket again.

I called Snyders and they gave the following:
B-6051-C was Best 573-SA
B-6051-X was Best 573-C but I bet she misread and should have been "G"

That's funny Gary. I've had just the opposite experience. Go figure!

We have installed over 200 of that head all using the Best graphite gasket with copper coat. Very good results. Both in stock

Here's the "kiss of death"... I have three Model As and haven't ever had a head gasket failure.

'30 Coupe has 5.5 Snyders head and the silicone type gasket.
'30 Station Wagon has 6.0 Snyders head and the silicone type gasket.
'31 Sedan has a new rebuilt engine 6.0 Snyders head with the Best type graphite gasket no copper coat.

All of them were torqued to 65 lbs including the water neck studs.

YMMV

Now looking forward to my first blown head gasket in 20 years.
