Default Drum tail light stop plate finish?

I am rebuilding the tail light on an early 28. The stop plate was rusted an did not look like it had been painted or plated. What color should I paint it and also the inside of the light bracket?

Thanks
Jeff

If you are talking about this, it appears to be silver in color?
