Default Water pump thrust collar? (pic)

I'm concerned about what the attached pic shows. It appears there is a thrust collar on the water pump shaft. There is about .050 endplay. I can't seem to find a similar pic. Is this standard? any one have recommendations?

Thanks!

That doesn't look like the normal thrust collar sold by the vendors. Is your fan an aluminum 2 blade?

I like the new thrust collar sold by the vendors, and I place it on the front of the shaft so it's out of sight while doing it's job. It could also go in front of the adjustment nut, but then you'd have to move it to move the adjustment nut. I like to loosen or unscrew the adjustment nut when I grease the rear bushing, so the old grease pushes out the front, rather than into the coolant.

I'd remove the pump and take it apart to see what you have.

So, is it possible the collar has slipped to the front end of the shaft? BTW, the pump has no leaks, and no side to side shaft play.

The allen head screw was tight. It looked like the collar could rub and wear the back side of the pump housing at the front if it was snug enough to drag.

Should I slide it to just in front of the packing nut and pull the shaft forward to take up the endplay?

I have a four blade fan, crack free for now.

Maybe next weekend when I have more time, I'll tear into it.

Thanks.

See page 57 of the 2015 Bratton's catalog.

Water pump shaft collar, Before installing fan slide on the teflon washer then the collar.

So it appears the above water pump was assembled improperly.

Kevin, I found it on page 59 of the 2016 Bratton's catalog. That's exactly what the collar looks like. I believe you may be correct.

When I bought the car, the previous owner had a TON of parts. I probably have 10 to 15 water pump housings, as well as parts to rebuild at least 5 or 6. I think I have enough packing to last a lifetime.

I may just put another one together, and install it. It might be a good time for a 2 blade fan also.

I think that may be the front bearing felt retainer you are seeing.

Bob, it kinda looks like it in the picture, but it is a collar with an allen head set screw. But now the questions is where is the retainer? I put some grease in the fitting until just a little squeezed out, and it came out next to the housing near the bottom. If the retainer and felt were not there, I think I might have seen grease coming from near the shaft.

I took a look at some of the other water pumps. There was one that was painted all pretty and freshly assembled. Thanks to the previous replies about pumps, I checked the bushing. The hole was not lined up with the grease fitting.

It doesn't make any difference for the front bushing does it? It looks like there is a groove in the housing so the grease is not trapped behind the bushing.
