ok , just learned what the problem is . the rebuilder put the WRONG valves in . could not say how he adjusted them on the build . never offered to fix it . but at least we know now . operator error !!!!!!!!!! so back to our plan #2 ………… thanks all as the mystery is solved ……………. steve

I think you have the wrong lifters. If you rotate enough that the lifter is all the way up and you can’t get a wrench on the flats of the lifter, then it’s too short. Look at how much thread there is between the body of the lifter and the adjustable part. Do you have the cam rotated to bring a lifter to its highest point?

Try to put a small screwdriver in the boss to lock the flat and then turn the screw, might be a way around the problem.

I am sorry but the person asking the question has been directed to how to adjust in this case and has been given several examples of ways to do it. The small screwdriver idea sounds like a good way to put a burr/nick in the lifter hole. Pulling the head or using a C type valve spring compresses with head in place, I don't think are necessary. They also have never even said if they had checked the gap to see if adjustment was needed that I have seen.
