Flathead Transmission Question
Can anyone identify the shift tower in the photo? This appears to be 36-38, but with the provision for an emergency brake. Is this off a truck?

Re: Flathead Transmission Question
Any numbers on it? I found an 81A-7222 shifter housing from a 1938 trans that had the double detent style casting.....but there was only one detent set up in it. The other side was a flat blank...like the casting could have been drilled for the plug, spring and ball but never was.
The mounting bosses are typical of the 1932 type shifter housing but I've never seen one like your picture. Let us know what exact numbers/letters appear on the casting. Perhaps it would show up in one of the parts manuals.

Re: Flathead Transmission Question
Notice in the upper RH corner of the photo, there is a threaded hole (1/4-20?) and boss behind the hole for the top cover bolt. This extra hole is to mount a 1932-style stoplight switch. The tower slopes rearward? DICK is right, unless there is something else I am missing... There are at least a couple of versions of 1932 tops; one with the "squared off" LH side of the tower, and an earlier version that is rounded. There are also corresponding "transmission cover tins" to fit each style.

Thanks for your responses. I bought this on ebay and it hasn't arrived yet. When it does, I'll be sure to report any numbers I find (although it sounds like you guys have nailed it). I guess the photo is deceiving, as this did not appear (to me) to have the slope back tower. I thought it looked like 36-38, but I guess the photo was taken from a bad angle. Live and learn. Thanks again. |
