Installing a Model B engine/trans in an A
I learned this week that one of my favorite vendors is going out of business. That’s Auto Care and Restoration (AC&R), www.partsformodelafords.com. They used to carry a rear motor mount designed for installing a Model B engine in a Model A. Also, they carried a kit for adapting the Model B transmission (radius ball, E-brake, foot brake and clutch pedal attachments).
I know that many folks like to install V8 transmissions, in Model As, but the B engine/trans combo is a very nice set-up, especially since the V8 gears can be installed in a B transmission. Does anyone know another source for these adapter kits? |

Aren't the syncros quite a bit different on a 39 vs. a 32?

There is a difference in the syncros. Here's the link, http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...sID_3speed.htm

In my opinion, the later gears makes a better shifting transmission, and you have a wider choice of ratios. Again, JUST MY OPINION. Chris |

Beyond Just Gears..
Keep in mind that use of the later gears in a B trans also requires at least a '36 and better a '39 shift top with the 91prefix shift fork, an additional expense. Beyond that, the kit needs to include the bracket to mount the Ebrake on the top. Lots of pieces. Glad to hear that Sacramento may have the install kit. Good Luck: Fred A

The '32 trans has straight cut low, reverse gear. You can't mix them with the later gears.

[QUOTE=Richard in Anaheim CA;35581]The '32 trans has straight cut low, reverse gear. You can't mix them with the later gears.
Depends on how later. Between '32 and '35 there were two kinds of gearsets as shown in the service bulletins but usually later refers to the changes of '39-'40 that is pretty much mixable thru '51 light duty pickups. A technicality for sure. Those later gearsets call for the shift fork with the 3" width and correct offset. That fork can be fitted to the '36 shift top but most use the superior '38 double detent top. The most popular reason to use the later gears is that the synchro is superior, the shifter throw shorter, and there are four(really 5) different ratio sets that can be chosen to get the gear reduction just right for the car and engine's power, plus it is more simple than getting the earlier gearsets to stay in gear. I wouldn't use that early stuff except for an authentic restoration. Can hardly give away the early gear and tops cause the guys that actuall use the stuff know better. Good Luck: Fred A |

For anyone planning on installing a B engine/trans in a Model A, the only source I know of for the adapter kit is Bert's.

Yes, we made a run of those brackets to install the B engine/trans in the A chassis. We have many sets in stock. We also have most of the other specialty itmes that AC&R made, as we bought out their stock last winter.
