Odyssey Battery

I know a lot of you guys have used the Optima battery. Has anyone used the Odyssey batteries?

They make a 12V that is only 3.8 inches wide. It will put out 500 CCA. Is that enough to crank a flathead? I realize 600 or 800 would be WAY better, but keep in mind I'm in Florida so I don't have any really cold weather.

My background (way back) is electronics but I'm sorta out of touch with CCA requirements and what we might need for a flathead.

I don’t have one yet, but will be getting a PC680 from them. Go to the HAMB do a search on batteries. A lot of guys using these or Dyna Batts.

Never used the Odyssey. Unless you have a high compression ratio and a boatload of initial ignition advance, 500 should be just fine.

I have a PC680 in my 32 Coupe. It cranks a 302 SBF engine just fine. I don't have any accessories other than a cooling fan and I find the little battery to be adequate for my use. I have had it about 6 years. Easy to charge up if drained, takes up little space. If it will crank up a SBF then I think it should work for a flathead.

I have 6 larger Odyssey batteries in use currently in boats.(Do not remember the Model#} I have used one of the skinny little Odyssey in a car and it cranked the engine surprisingly good. Obviously I like them and have never, yet, had to replace any of them with the oldest being around 10 years. As a matter of info I use on-board charging systems in the boats which are always plugged in when the boats are not in use.

Wow. That 680 is only rated at 170 CCA. And that was kinda where I was heading....to put it under the seat in the pickup.

What terminal style are most of you using? Seems like they offer three different types.

I used the brass sae terminal with a bolt for the cable terminal like CT1932.
I bought the PC680 and an aluminum case to mount it from West Coast Batteries.

I haven't used the little Odyssey ones but I've used the big ones for our helicopter start cart. They lasted well (around 7 or 8 years). We used two big 12-volters to make 24-volts for the cart. Our turbine customers use their own Start Pac lithium batteries now. Now those things are way expensive but they are small and easy to carry in the aircraft.

There should be 6 volts batteries, isn't that what a lot of golf carts use? Issue there would be they are deep cycle batteries.

Thank you. Gentlemen, what does it mean when they say the battery has a metal jacket? Seems like the "extreme" version of the PC680 is metal jacketed and the performer series isn't. About a $20 difference between the two.

My first Odyssey battery was a metal jacket one. Just as it sounds, the battery was covered with a metal skin. My last one just had a plastic cover.

I have the 680 also in my 32 Tudor. Like others, I mounted it under the rear seat on it's side. It's been in the car for almost 8 years. Works great & spins my large flathead just fine.
I keep a Battery Minder on it when parked.
I wouldn't hesitate to get another.
I think I paid about $ 130 delivered.

I used to ride high powered V8 motorcycles. (V8Choppers.com for a look) I ran a 600 hp 427 cu in small block with 10.3-1 compression and used an Odyssey PC 680 battery. It cranked it fine but would not crank for more than about 30 seconds before slowing down. I would think it would work just fine in a flathead.
