Default Which head bolts?

What grade bolts do I need for the heads on my 59AB engine?

Use studs not bolts

Grade 5 will work well.Studs are pia.and not cheap.

Bolts can also be a pita if torqued too much or too many times they can pull threads up and out of the deck. They can also be a pita sealing them in threaded holes going into coolant flow areas. JME

Ole Ron should chip in here, but if he does he will tell you that your not building a hemi rocket ship, the 59ab has more head bolts/studs than a modern 500hp engine! therefore a grade 5 bolt x24 is more than enough. studs offer more strength but are a pain, bolts will let you remove the head down the road without hassle. Thanks to all who replied. I emailed "Hal11" and he sent detailed instructions on welding a washer and then a nut on the broken studs. They both came out fairly easily.

I am also building a 1953 Ford Flathead as we speak and I am using new head studs with the chrome a corn nuts they are not cheap but if you want to build a nice detailed motor you have to pay the price.
