Default 1931 Radiator Shell Upper Paint

I thought we had discussed this in the past on here but I cannot seem to fine the right combination of words in the Search feature so maybe someone can help me. Are we of the opinion that the 1931 radiator shell upper insert's paint (lower body color) would have been buffed, --or unbuffed originally? Why and where did you find your answer?

Thanks!!

Brent I don't recall the discussion here but I would be interested in the answer too. I have a pic of my 150B from the late 30's and my upper 31 shell insert is black. As you can see in the pic there is a definite sheen to the upper. On a different note, the black of the upper and lower insert on all the pics is in conflict to what the JS state. Both my inserts are black. My father asked my grandfather in the 60's if that was the original shell and if it had ever been painted and he was told no. I have also seen other 150's and a few deliveries where the shells insert color were Black and not the "lower body color". I think there may have been a factory deviance or variation when it came to light commercial vehicles. This is something that might need to be addressed in the JS. I don't mean to change or highjack the thread but it seems somewhat on topic.

MAFCA paint book P.14

In reality there is no feasible way to buff the inserts.

Both of my maroon '31's have had black top inserts in the radiator shell. I don't think either one had been redone.

There you go, ... I knew I had read that in the past but I just could not find it. Thanx!!

Regarding the no feasible way to buff the insert, I agree. On a side-note, I asked at the last JSC meeting regarding the curtain light rubber bumpers on the upper deck whether they were originally painted or left natural rubber. The consensus was they were painted. While I believe many actually paint those body color today, I have wondered how the factory workers were able to buff the paint back then without getting them little 'suckers' caught in the buffing wheel!!

Lacquer had more sheen. It was also black instead of dark gray. I hate to see DP90 used on ANYTHING unless it's top coated!

I also thought they were natural for the same reason........somebody please
explain this to me if they were painted, how was that section polished!

DP-90 will chalk from UV exposure. The right solvent in some black lacquer and it still should look really nice w/out buffing. You could cheat for colored inserts and get a similar look and better durability. Use a reduced single stage urethane with a few ounces of flattening agent. You could use a regular basecoat color with a cap full of spot repair hardener too. Just a fresh-sprayed shine, no more.
