Default Ujoint gaskets for 1947 Ford

In the attached photo there is a Ujoint gasket set I ordered from Dennis Carpenter that has the 2 clam shell gaskets, the small speedometer gasket and one long, thin gasket that I don’t know where it goes in my 1947 Ford Super Deluxe. I thought maybe it would fit at the back end of the transmission (another attached photo) but that is just a guess. Many hours searching on this topic with no answer so need your help!

That's for the groove in the rear end of the clamshell to keep the lube from leaking (much) out where the torque tube bell enters.

The cork gasket is pressed into the groove on the "clam shells". I use a wooden dowel to press them down into that groove.

As I recall that cork gasket is # 4516 that fits as one piece inside the rounded lip of the split clamshell halves, NOT as shown in above photo. I replaced my cork gasket with the aftermarket version (blue) shown in Post #8 here below. It does a better job of sealing over the long term, in my opinion.

Don't forget to install the thin paper gaskets before sliding the torque tube drive shaft splines into the U-joint/ transmission. Also, make sure the grease fitting on the lower clamshell faces downward toward the ground.

THANKS SO MUCH everyone. Understood and very good advice.

I noticed that the clamshells bolts go in “opposite of one another” and am wondering why and if it really matters. I also note that the support bracket bolts point up and now that it is installed, cannot insert from the bottom so going to point down. Does that matter?? Thanks

I don't see where it would matter if the bolts point downward. I filled clamshell until I saw grease inside the speedometer turtle opening as shown in third photo. Ignore that little clear plastic tube you see alongside the grease cartridge in 4th photo. That's just a little something I made so I could add grease from the top of the clamshell instead of crawling under the car.

Originally the bolts were installed FROM the top. They utilized slotted head hex nuts and cotter pins. A total PITA to R&R once the car is assembled.

Thanks everyone. Great advice.

After a successful install after exhaustive hours, pulling the transmission/rear end is truly a puzzle, with the intricacies of the clam shells and that horrible to fit cork gasket (I really understand the neoprene suggestion!), spline fitting, jacking up rear end of engine, bracket fitting, etc. My replacement support bracket is different from the original and has caused a few headaches as it sits differently, has hard rubber insets and the bolts spin, and very difficult to get a wrench on bottom to bolt things up.

All back together now and the Test Run had some good and bad. Good: clutch plate running smooth and when putting into gear, only one back wheel turned. Will check on gear oil for that and look at brakes of other wheel. Bad: major squealing noise when engaging the clutch. I'm thinking that it's the clutch release bearing. It's brand new (came with the clutch) and so is the hub with new spring. Did I put it on backwards (does it matter?). It felt like it went one way to fit into the hub. Do I need to add grease somewhere that I didn't add to already? Feels like I failed at this with such a loud noise coming when engaging the clutch! Here is a link to see this: https://youtu.be/MJl_WhUF9sk?si=V87tvpMgov5mgVz3

Sounds like the TO bearing was installed backwards. Did you have to press it onto the carrier, or did it just slide on with no effort. No effort = backwards.

Yeeesh. No instructions in the box. Nothing I found on this topic on YouTube or in my notes (well I did watch a guy put it on the way I ended up putting it on, but maybe he found out the hard way too). Yeeeesh. Sounds like a ton of work to get back at the TO bearing to switch it around. Think I've done any damage to it? Thanks Nick.

This is what mine looked like before taking it off the carrier. The shoulder on the TO bearing goes toward the clutch fingers.

Does anyone know of a good technique to get the gasket into the clam shells with goal to wrap around the torque tube but through a tight area? I can only get one in at a time and then I have zero room to press in the gasket. Does the neoprene solve this?
