Default Oil fill cap questions

I am still breaking in my rebuilt A motor. After a short drive, I recently noticed a "mist" of dirty oil/dust below my oil fill cap. I cleaned it off with a few paper towels and pulled the cap off. To my surprise there was nothing but a clear air pathway through the cap. Is there normally some filtering media inside the cap? The oil level is full and looks clean/new on the dip stick.

Anyhow, I subsequently stuffed some stainless steel pot scrubbing pad material in the fill cap, thinking this might reduce the mist that apparently has been exiting the fill tube. It fits securely and will not fall out. Good idea or bad? Thanks for your thoughts.
