Re: 6.1 Head / Carburetor Choice / 600 HP V8
Brent, post #8. When I was still working we had a complete machine shop, the shop foreman was a car guy. He bored out 2 A intake manifolds to 1.25". I have used one since 1997.

Interestingly enough, some folks talk about drilling them out however I prefer to bore them out instead. At slow(er) airflow speeds, the air/fuel mixture does not like a smooth runner surfaces as it causes the fuel to fall out of suspension and cling to the walls. When the manifold has a somewhat textured surface, the air is tumbled as it flows which actually keeps the fuel in suspension. Using a boring head in a Bridgeport mill creates more of a textured surface than a twist drill does, so it does help (-albeit marginally) in performance. |

Recently sold a Stromberg-Bendix intake manifold that was available through Ford dealers in 1931. The number of aftermarket performance parts for Model A engines in the 1930's was astounding. My CRAGAR OHV head was made in 1935. Then as now, there were A owners that kept them stock and then there were owners looking to get more performance out of a 40 HP engine. To each his own

My Dad, who was around when Model A's were plentiful and cheap, asked me when I got the pickup I now have: "what are you going to do to 'hop it up'?"
