Re: Model A Exhaust/Muffler Options
I don't want to speak for Mike, and this might not be what happened to him, but there have been documented cases of the welds cracking when the tail pipe is tight to the frame.

Re: Model A Exhaust/Muffler Options
Here is a LINK to a photo and story on Vince's website about my experience.
The single major variance between an Aries and an original muffler: Originals had electrically butt welded seams- no filler rod, the parts were forced against each other with a huge amperage current fusing them together. The Aries are TIG welded on a non-original overlapping seam. There are two general grades of SS tubing. 300 and 400. Aries uses 300 because it polishes to a mirror finish. OEM manufacturers who use SS for exhausts use 400 grade because 300 series stainless becomes brittle after constant hot/cold cycling, especially in areas with welds. 400 series does not polish and quickly takes on a brownish hue after heating. Aries understands that 'shiny' is more important in aftermarket sales. They deal with the brittle issue by using a loose rear clamp that allows the pipe to float. |

Re: Model A Exhaust/Muffler Options
I called Midas to get a ballpark figure on bending the pipes, and they told me about $300. So I decided to go with the full set from Mac's for about the same money. It includes everything from the exhaust manifold all the way back.

Re: Model A Exhaust/Muffler Options
I believe mine is for a Farmall A. It was the correct inlet size. Definitely doesn't have the original model a sound, but a nice mellow tone that is a bit different than a cherry bomb. I'm considering adding a tailpipe to see how it affects the sound.

Re: Model A Exhaust/Muffler Options
I just received and installed a muffler from Mac's and I am VERY happy with it. The car has only ran a few minutes due to the cold weather but it fir up to the manifold well and sounds great.

Re: Model A Exhaust/Muffler Options
The Ford 8n muffler at Tractor Supply is similar to the A pipe with muffler, tailpipe, 90 degree bent header with a flange on it. Looks like it might be a drop in but I have never tried. The whole package is 36 bucks.

Re: Model A Exhaust/Muffler Options
The N series Ford tractor mufflers are 1-1/2 inch pipe. You can't tell that from a picture though. They use a mounting flange like an A,but much smaller. We ran into a fellow selling a pile of them at Amherst one year,he thought they were A mufflers. Most of the A people knew better, but they were grabbing them up anyway, they knew an 8N muffler for ten bucks was a good find.

Re: Model A Exhaust/Muffler Options
if you change the muffler style , it will no longer sound like an "A" .

Re: Model A Exhaust/Muffler Options
Reds built me a header for a stock manifold but instead of the 4 pipes into 1 collector he did 2 pipes into one collector and gave me two pieces of 4' pipe. I tried running the straight pipes and could have gotten by but decided to go with two Thrush glasspacks from O'Reilly's. Mufflers and clamps were about $60.00. Header and pipes with tax were 190.00. I was surprised at the noticeable difference in power. I only ran the pipes to the rear axle. I like it but it is definitely louder than stock unless you baby it.

Joe Davis at ARIES is the Model "A" muffler man, buy one and forget about it!

Re: Model A Exhaust/Muffler Options
My speedster has Red's Headers ( 4 into 1) and to lessen even more the back pressure i took and old "cheapy" model A muffler and split it open, took the baffels out then welded it back together. Lots of work, but for a speedster it has a great sound.

Re: Model A Exhaust/Muffler Options
I believe that Aries offers a muffler with larger holes in the baffles for less back pressure.

Re: Model A Exhaust/Muffler Options
Thanks Keith! I would treat my 8N to a new muffler if I could get one for 10 bucks!

Re: Model A Exhaust/Muffler Options
While debating about investing in an Aries I cut out my restrictive 1970's repro muffler and welded in a cherry bomb ($30). Wow. Sounds real nice without being loud and has even less back pressure than the Aries. I'll run it for quite a while.
