Default Aluminum Timing Gear

I bought an Aluminum Timing Gear and went to put it in and the fit is too tight. There is no .003-4 back lash. When we tried to push the cam into the block we had to turn the crank as we pushed the gears together and stopped before we were half way in. I thought this gear was not an oversized gear, but is there any way to measure for that? The old fiber gear fit OK, but had some chipped teeth and needed to get replaced.

Thanks, Jerry

Several things could be the problem.

1- The block could have been align bored somwhere in the past and they moved the mainline up more than the .001 or .002 that is normal. An under size cam gear should fix that.

2- The snout of the crank could be bent.
The gear lash will vary as you rotate the crank.
3- The the cam could be bent.
The gear lash will vary as you rotate the crank.

I've seen crooked line bore jobs cause this same problem.
Some places insist on the fiber since it is forgiving if they get it crooked.
I've seen them out by .006

After checking for a bent shaft if they are straight measure the centre lines then contact Dan McEachern for a new gear

Hi Jerry,

Chipped teeth on a Model A fiber gear means somewhat of a problem in itself that may warrant further investigation.

Per reply no. 4, Mr. Dan McEachern wilh vast timing gear "experience" will no doubt have suggestions as to what to investigate if you call him ....... he is a gentleman who will be most willing to assist ..... again, if you call.

---here is a link to some specs
http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/camcrankposition.htm

If you measure the distance between the 2 shafts you can know if it is a parts problem or a align boring problem
crankshaft gear runout is more likely a crankshaft reground off center than bent----but if that is the problem the gear backlash would be too much---then too tight depending on the position

Has the block been modified by the addition of bushings in the camshaft bore? ---if so this adds another place to be "off"
