slow starter when warm
OK fellas, Ive read most of the posts re: slow starters, so here is my question.
I have no problem with initial starter cranking when the car is cool and it will crank and run nicely. After a ride around for a bit, stop and come back to ride away, it always cranks, but never like it does when cool. I put a insulation wrap around the body of the starter thinking it may be getting too warm next to the exhaust manifold. Initial crank up leads me to believe that connections are satisfactory for electrical flow. What should I look at next to diagnose the problem? Thanks ALL!! |

JD
That is when poor connections show up, with a bigger load. You read the posts so you know the drill. Bruce

Re: slow starter when warm
I had the same problem with my '51. Checked and cleaned grounds and connections to no avail. Then I realized I had a group 1 battery in it (I needed a new battery the year before in a pinch, and it was all that was available). Group 1 batteries are quite a bit smaller than what originally came in Fords and are used in tractors, etc. I replaced it with an Optima and all the problems disappeared. The proper battery that's not 100% could have the same problem.

Re: slow starter when warm
If it feels like a flat battery, chances are it's poling , soon it will fail.

Re: slow starter when warm
Try cleaning or turning the armature, installing new brushes and springs.
Also make sure the starter has a good clean ground against the pan "no paint". With a good battery, and connections your hot start problem should go away. |

Re: slow starter when warm
You may want to have the battery load tested.

Cable size makes a difference also. Positive and ground.

Re: slow starter when warm
Has anyone found that poor air filters may cause problems with warm start?
