Default Pilot bearing won't fit on input shaft

So I am pre-assembling the 30 Tudor Trans.
The input shaft is too fat for the pilot bearing.
It's a new trans input shaft.

Any suggestions for trimming it down... without using lathe ?

From my measurement they boot seem to be ~.67
The old input shaft is ~.66 at the base.

would Emery cloth do the trick ?

thank you
john

you need the 3rd decimal place for this kind of precision.
Per Brattons the tip of the input shaft should be .668

get a good dial caliper and re-measure.

If the input shaft is indeed .668 I would NOT file it or sand it down; I WOULD get a pilot bearing that fit properly. They ARE out there. What source are you using for your parts? Some sources are WAY better than others. I will leave names out of this right now

Sometimes, during the machining of the chamfer on the end of the shaft, it causes the metal to raise a very little amount. Usually, a very fine file run around the diameter of the shaft will remove that "burr."

What I think you have is a situation whereby a small "bump" on the end of the shaft has caused the same thing. Again, the fine file.

Then, using an 0-1 outside micrometer, measure all the way around to ensure the diameter is within specs.

Also make sure that when you try to tap the bearing on, that you place the bearing on the end of the shaft at a perfect 90 degree to ensure if starts properly.

Is the new bearing the proper size?

I would use a bushing in place of the bearing. I have found that the original bearings, which were not sheilded or sealed, filled with clutch facing dust and got stuck, which wore out the end of the input shaft. The replacement bearings are sealed, but the seal creates enough drag that they do not spin easily, and some input shafts will spin inside the bearing. A pilot bushing solves that.

I always prefer / use the roller bearing style, what's important is input alignment.. Chocolate and vanilla I guess

Check the diameter of the old one to new, and as Tbird said pay close attention to the full measurement. Many folks tend to mushroom the end trying to drive off the old bearing with a hammer against the pilot end and do damage.
Exactly what I suspect.

Mitch,
I've not seen any availability for the roller bearing style, only the bushing style and the ball bearing style.

Do you have a PN/ source?

IIRC the pilot bearing is a # 6203, 17mm ID, 40 mm OD, 12mm thick, available open or with 1 or 2 shields or seals.

The 6203 is probably the most commonly used bearing in the WORLD

Thank you all.
so in the end the shaft was not mushroomed, it was just too fat.
I took a file, and spun it by hand and shaved it down a little till the bearing slipped on.
crude, but it worked.
Great info too!
now to find the sledge hammer to install those pistons... seems these little edges on them are sticking out. JK.

john.

You might find a jack hammer works better on those Pistons
