Default oil Pumping... the leak saga.

So I pulled the engine out of my 30 Tudor. ( the engine is named: Puddler ) I pulled some of the engine apart, the pistons and crank shaft seem fine, all the head studs came out fine.
it has been sleeved back to stock pistons.

I found that the front valve gear cover tension spring setup was not doing any work.. it's jammed in the timing gear cover.

I looked at the back of the engine behind the flywheel housing where you can see the cam shaft.. it appears that oil is leaking here.

so my question are:
1.) on my rebuilt temporary engine, how does one seal this back end of the camshaft up ?

2.) could this be the cause of the dribbles/... line, of oil from the bell housing ?

3.) Should I just switch to a 4 cylinder OM616 Benz Diesel engine?

4.) any tips on installing this valve gear cover spring properly ?

re benz....just seeing if you read to the end :-)

john.

There should be a gasket between engine block and flywheel cover. It helps to apply sealer around the gasket at the camshaft.
If that gasket is missing, thats a leak.

As for the timing cover. The spring just sits in the boss. I use grease to hold the spring in and since I'm so messy a goob of grease always finds its way all over the plunger and gear face.

It's good practice to grease the plunger and spring anyway's..

The shims at the top of the flywheel housing are there to make up up for the thickness of the rear cam gasket

Use a liquid sealer around the cam on both sides of that gasket, front and rear.

Markus Maurer, shortened the rear of his camshaft & machined a plug, with an "O" Ring, to fit in the block.
Google his website in Switzerland & read his stuff, you'll be there for HOURS!! The Man's a GENIUS RESTORER & we "talk" often.

I worked on one engine cover with a stuck plunger. I was able to use Kroil and tap on the plunger to get it loose. As Mitch said, be sure to grease the plunger well where it contacts the camshaft and on all sides of the plunger. I also grease the cam gear teeth so they don't make an initial start dry.
