Default .003/.005 timing gear

I have the dreaded knock caused by too much back lash in th timing gears (.017" by measurement) and a weak plunger spring in the timing cover. My question is about the over size timing gears available. What is meant by an over size gear? Where does the .003" or .005" come from? In other words, which dimension is over size?

Unless you actually measure the gear teeth, you have no way to know what the oversize is referring to. Many times the oversize value refers to the amount that the tooth thickness varies from a "standard" gear.
Depending upon how worn your crank gear is, you may not need an oversize cam gear.
