i am removing the spare tire and mounting bracket from the right rear fender of my 40 ford truck. i am looking for a molded patch that can be welded to cover the indentation. any know of such a panel and who can i contact/

I've have not seen a patch panel like like that, but if it exists someone here will know about it. I would think you would need to cut one out of a "donor" fender. Are you on the Front Range? I might have something.

Early VW fender will have a close shape.

Cut the indentation out and flip it over. I suspect it has the same curve.

I used a porta power and pushed mine out. It isn't that deep, easier than cutting and welding.

My body guy pounded out a patch panel on the concrete floor and welded it on to the fender over the dimple. Looks perfect.

That was done with a die. It has a reversed crown and that means its been streched big time. Yes you can work it up but you are going to have alot of srinking to do to get the excess metal out. If you plan to metal finish it.

Just stating what I did with mine. I must admit I did use a skim coat of filler.

Any fender with a similar curvature will provide a good patch.

I just went to a metal shaping class - just take the shape from the other fender and flip it around. Here's how: place/tape saran wrap on the driver fender in the area of the patch needed (for ease of tape removal), tightly criss/cross tape over the area with cloth reinforced tape (packing tape), now remove from the fender. Go over to your pass fender, turn it from top to bottom to bottom to top, place over the indented area, make your outline of the opening and trim. Now you have an exact shape of the patch you need. It worked really, really slick - for kicks, take the patch from an old C---- fender - it will put a smile on your face while doing it!

I hammer and dollyed mine until it was gone. Little bondo and it was done!

Years ago I built a 40 PU for a customer and my body shop cut the spot out and rolled a patch on the English wheel and hammer welded it in. Couldn't tell it front or rear. Also If I remember right we had to do something to the running board???

The running board has some missing rib impressions that I welded up with half round stock.....not that difficult. It shows good now because I had the running boards coated with professional bed liner. I highly recommend that because I don't have to keep people off of the paint. Every time my neighbor comes over he puts his foot on either the bumper or running board.

the easy way is use a 42 -47 pu fender which has no dimple and change the bottom edge were it bolts to the running board from a 38-41 fender. less welding and smaller area to finish. with little to no bondo

Isn't their different widths between the 40/41 and the 42-47? I should of compared them when i had the two sitting next to each other.

the width of the head board and tail gate. not the fenders. difference in the fenders is were it bolts to the running board, 42-47 doesnt have the dimple that is mentioned above and 42-47 doesnt have the hole for the gas fill pipe.

3/4 & 1 ton fenders are bigger
