Default here are the symptoms, guess the cause

Here are the symptoms, guess the cause: Pre-ignition under load, running hot under load, decrease in power, rolling idle.

First to get it right wins. (You get nothing if you win, except satisfaction)

Would rather comment on what you think is a logical plan of attack.

Too much spark advance (19 degrees) like you get when using A distributor with Model B timing cover.

Lean carb will do it also.

I'll add that the timing was fine. The car ran beautifully on the trip out, and started exhibiting the symptoms on the way home. I have found the cause, and I'm wondering if any of you fine fellas could hazard a guess to what I found.

Ok, I'll show my hand. I did a quick compression check by cranking over the engine by hand, and it sure felt like the compression was off on a couple cylinders. Pulled the head and sure'nuff, the head gasket had blown between 3 and 4.

Only If your on the left side and your right handed.
If your on the right side and your left handed it would be 3 and 4
If your on the left side and your left handed it would also be 3 and 4
If your on the right side and your left handed you are in the wrong place.

If you are ambidextrous you have to count 1, 2, 3, 4 and subtract one from the last number to get the first number then add one to it to get the second number.
You could also count 1, 2, 3, 4 select the last number for the first one and then subtract one to get the second.

You could also say the it is the cylinder closest to the firewall and the one that is next to it.

Just Saying!

Curious, before you pulled the head did you do a compression check?
