Very noisy ride 1931 coupe

I was trying to figure out where all the noise was coming from as I drive down the street. I figured the car may be a little squeaky but this was ridiculous. Come to find out it, it was just dry leaf springs, I spayed them down with WD40 no more squeaks, just thought I'd pass it on - I love simple fixes.

Next noise is a large thump from the rear echoing through the rumble seat area as I go over big bumps. Seems the bottom pan of the trunk hits the top of rear end pumpkin. I put some rubber inner tube in there and it better. Can someone tell me what should the space be between the top of the pumpkin and the floor pan of the trunk? Is there a way to increase the clearance? Thanks

That is the purpose of accessory spring covers, to keep the springs lubricated and quiet. Each spring cover has a felt reservoir that you saturate with a high viscosity oil. Via capillary action, the oil gets between the spring leaves.

The improvement in ride smoothness is very noticeable.

Sounds like a nice improvement, I assume the springs need to come apart to install the add on, right?

How long is your rear spring center bolt. I know of one model A that ended up with hole in the top of deff. case from a bolt that was not cut off.

Installed a set this spring using used 600w from transmition. They dripped for a few weeks then stopped, no squeaks rides more smoothly.

I soaked them in 30 weight oil and mounted them. A bit of a mess and they dripped for about a week but man what a difference, it is so quiet now, thanks for the tip.

Anothe often missed lubrication point is the oil hole in the front hand crank bearing that is intended to lube the front spring in the crossmember

Well lubed springs along with properly working shocks make for a good ride ---but if the shocks don't work or are missing a dry stiff spring takes on some of the shock function---

I don't worry about mine--I can't even TURN IT "Maybe" a dab of grease on your finger, NO, NOT THET FINGER, use your PINKIE, so's you don't get it STUCK in there

Page 359-360 of the service bulletins---all starting crank bearings now have a hole in the lower part of the bearing, flowing a little oil through this hole allows oil drain down between the sides of the crossmember and eliminates any possibility of a squeak occurring between the crossmember and the spring>

I too though --why does the crank need oil ----then I tried oiling there ---and saw a change in the lubrication of the spring ---the oil goes down the space between the centerbolt of the spring and the frame onto the spring

if your bearing does not have a hole it shows where to drill one..
