Default Extremmly High Oil pressure in a 1952 Ford Flathead all of a sudden?

Would a broken Pressure relief spring cause High oil pressure readings and a knocking sound?

Never seen a broken spring. And if it was broken, it wouldn't cause a knock. Need more of a description.

A weak spring lowers the pressure, a broken spring should be real low.
Use a mechanical gauge to check the pressure. How high is it?? I'm thinking real low pressure and a bad gauge. G.M.

a couple of things come to mind, a bad gage or a stuck relief valve in pump, but as far as i know neither will cause a knocking sound, is it a sharp knock or a deep knock?

My 40 uses a lot of oil don"t smoke and some time there is a drop or two of oil when parked. My oil gage goes over 50 when driving and drops a little at idle. What should the average pressure be.

I also have erratic oil pressure reads. But you can't even hear my car running. It is quiet. Nothing leaks out of my car. The car runs at about 170 degrees and does not get hot under normal circumstances. What should the pressure be and how should the gauge act?

30lb -50lb fairly normal when up at 50-60mph. Dropping to almost nothing at idle is quite common, they seem to not mind this. And can go on for years like it.
If its the stock electric guage, these can be far from acurate. Capiliary type are better.
There was an old rule of thum, 30lb at 30mph is fine.
I replaced the doings inside the oil guage on the truck, and fitted the guts of a capilary type inside. Looks the same as it did before, but it gives belivable pressure.
Martin.

If it spun a bearing on the crankshaft, it might have higher than normal readings until the bearing melts to pieces anyway.
