Default 1934 oil pan.

Just wondering if someone can help with the color for the oil pan on my 34?
Was it originally painted black or engine color?
Also was aluminium dipstick holder left in aluminium finish or painted as well?
Thanks
Graham

The introductory page of the 33-34 restoration manual shows the steel pan as engine color for the "engine" section- V8. I know the one for the 4cyl is painted black....Don't know why the one for the V8 would be any different???

In the "background" section (V8) it says "stamped steel parts painted black" all "aluminum cast parts are "self colored". there is also a color photo in the manual talking about the "baffles" in the oi pan and that photo shows the pan as "Black"???

I hate to disagree, but the oil pan was painted black, not engine color.

All steel pans for '33-'34, four or V8, were painted black on the entirety of the external surface, including the dipstick fitting. Where the idea that it might have been painted green, heaven only knows as only cast iron parts were so painted.

Just stated that in the 33-34 Club Restoration book, Chapter 3, color picture of the V8 motor the oil pan is "green"!!

That and other reasons are behind why a new one is in the works. (Someone had to have had the notion that it was green for it to end up prominently featured in the book, compounded by the peer reviewers all being on vacation the day the art work was completed.)

So there is going to be an updated and more accurate version? Great, but those of us who purchased the original manual assuming that the information was accurate should be able to purchase the new version at a discount

Green or gray as some Canadian (and U.S.) engine blocks and transmission cases were painted gray, not green?

Why do the simple things get so confusing.
I might paint the left side black and the right side green or should it be the other way around?
All things aside I think I will go with black.

Here is a photo of a NOS 1934 Ford Oil Pan. It was found in the obsolete stock of a Ford dealership many years ago. It still has its original Ford Tag on it with the part number 40-6675 on it. The original factory black paint is still on it and notice the dip stick support is black as well. The support has threads inside of it to accept a tube.

I am in the midst of completing the new 1940 book. Most true "1940 Ford guys" know there were numerous omissions and mistakes in the first book.
That being (hopefully) understood, you need to understand that relying on one source for all of the information required to restore any vehicle is your mistake and as such you "own it".
While I am quite confident the new 1940 manual will be as close to "perfectly" researched and subsequently written, I will clearly advise all that prudence requires other sources be utilized.
No one, including myself, can possibly know it all.

I think instead of asking for a discount, perhaps you should offer your thanks to the person(s) making the necessary effort to write a new book.

I have another pan here and its Black but don't know the history ,the green one was Canadian of my original car ,between 33 & 34 its possible that colour varied ,the Model A was green so they may have carried that on for a bit . I have never seen grey 99% of our cars came from Canada, I always thought Grey was a rebuild colour Ted

Kube you nailed it. I would tip my hat off to any current or past club book author. That certainly would include you and DavidG. The authors are only human and mistakes can be made. Luckily the club has guys like you two who are willing to take things a step further.

Is there presently some timeline or target date to complete the new '40 book and go to print?
