Re: 3rd member fill hole
I have not measured how much I put in, I just fill it to the bottom of the hole. With it at that level, I can check it and be sure it has oil. If it is below the hole and can't be reached, who knows how low it is?
This has been the standard for as long as I have worked on cars (Long time). |

Re: 3rd member fill hole
You can stick your pinky in the hole to feel the oil level below the fill hole.

Re: 3rd member fill hole
I squeezed almost a quart in and its still below the hole. Plus, I have a drip I didn't have before. I thought I might have over filled it.

Re: 3rd member fill hole
When I first checked Minervas' rear end, it was WAY overfilled, trans was OK.
HOW did someone do that???? When I first checked Vermins' stuff, the trans & diff contained ONLY 1/8 cup, in each???? Did someone DIE while waitin' for the PONY EXPRESS??? Bill Puzzled

Re: 3rd member fill hole
When the previous owner of my '30 CCPU delivered it, he had had it serviced by a modern Ford dealership in AZ. I won't go any further to identify the dealer but the rear end was bone dry. I'm sure they didn't have the tool to undo the plug - the Mitchell O/D was also very low and it has the same plug. I have flushed the rear end till the sparkly bits just about disappeared from the flush, filled with my usual oil and it has been OK since. I intend replacing the bearings at least as soon as I can but it does show how tough these things are. I think having the oil level a little high or low won't be the end of the world.
PS, I could type a page listing the other stupid things that modern dealer did.

Re: 3rd member fill hole
Fill it to the hole...different books and manuals state different amounts...
If you have a leak see where it is coming from as at that level it should be dry |

Re: 3rd member fill hole
If the oil level is below the bottom of the hole, I just use a bent wire to find the level.
I was taught that the oil level can be a long way down and there's still enough in there to get thrown around by the ring gear to lube everything.
