Default Mitchell OD in 47 Club Coupe

Anyone have a Mitchell in a 47 Ford club coup? Any floor clearance issues?
Any issue at all???

Thanks, Steve

No clearance issues whatsoever...
Mitchells are good units. I don't care for the control so much for aesthetic reasons but all in all, you will no doubt be pleased.

No problems with my installation in our 4 door 46 using the cable shift. If the floor lever shift is used there will be changes to the floor board and frame.
Best change I ever made.

I got one here in a 41 ford 4dr with a 50 merc motor. This was put in by another owner . I drove it one time with the 3.78 rear and it was a slug. On the ride it was noisey and it turned out the rear had heavy damage to the pinion. That was cause by a mechanic not the mitchell.

I swapped in a 4.11 ring and pinion and woke the heavy car up. It preforms a lot better. I live in a semi hilly area and the 3.78 wasnt good with the mitchell.

Cable shift and no modifications to the car

Most people do not know that an OD in a car, any car, requires a low gear ratio in the rear end.
Case in point, a '58-59 Ford F100 V8 has a standard rear gear ratio of 3.73, the same truck with a factory OD has a rear gear ratio of 3.89.
Most of the early Ford V8's had a standard gear ratio of 4.11, therefore an addition of an OD, regardless of which style worked very well. I think Ford went to the .3.78 ratio in about '46 and later, therefore the rear end needs to be re-geared..

I have one in my '47 club coupe. I wound up having to modify the floor slightly under the back seat. It cleared initially, but if I had a few passengers in the car the leading edge of the overdrive would contact the floor on bumps.

Also, I kept the 3:78 rear and I purchased the larger 36% overdrive and I am very happy with it.

Here is a picture that shows where it was hitting after it was installed, and the after picture shows how I modified the floor to accommodate it, prior to painting it so it would show up in a photograph. What you can't see is it was hitting on both sides of the driveshaft tunnel, so the other side is a mirror image of the modification, just blocked by the overdrive unit.

You should check with the administrator. I recently changed my name on the Model A forum and did not lose my post history.
