'39 window winder mechanism or parts

Shaft that inside handle attaches to is twisted off. How does that happen? Need the shaft and part with gear in it that is riveted to rest of mechanism. Chance of finding a working unit for a convert is slim, but other models should have the parts needed for repair. Probably going to Dearborn on Wed. or will pick up within 200 miles of Buffalo.
