Oil pan tube to oil pump seal
Thanks to everyone for helping me with the oil pan gasket seal. I've moved on to the oil pump pick up tube where it goes into the oil pump. Again, it's my '61' 292 Y block. The seal for this connection that comes with the oil pan gasket set(FELPRO) looks nothing like the original that I took off. It is a square edge "O" ring, about a 1/2" wide with an aluminum washer/sleeve on each side. It fits loosely on the pick up tube and when the jamb nut is tightened to the oil pump the washer/sleeves wrinkle pushing unevenly against the square edge "O" ring causing leakage. Has anyone used this pan gasket set (OS 10701 C-1) with success? I will take some pictures and post. Thanks for your time.

Re: Oil pan tube to oil pump seal
Part of the difference in snugness/fit on the tube between the two may be that the old one was installed and compressed for several years. ???
However, one that is snug to begin with would be less of a concern. IIRC, the seat in the oil pump has a bevel to it, as does the jamb nut. Not sure how that's supposed to work against the thin flat bushings in your 'new' sleeve. Inside that fitting when I pulled the engine from my '55 apart was only a small plastic ring, it looked like your 'old/inside' metal ring, but with no rubber sleeve and it wasn't leaking more than normal. (not sure why) The gasket kit I used going back together (photo below) had a snug fitting rubber sleeve much like your 'old' one, but no metal ring inside, just the rubber sleeve. I had ordered a second rubber sleeve (from Casco) since I missed seeing the one in the engine kit box. It also fit snug on the pickup tube (and no metal washers/rings) but was slightly smaller overall. I used the original bigger one from the set but had to really lean on the jamb nut to get it started. Not expecting any problems with it. . Last edited by dmsfrr; 08-30-2016 at 03:10 PM. |

Re: Oil pan tube to oil pump seal
The new one you have will work fine. Oil it up before you put it on, tighten by hand as far as it will go, then about 1/2 to one turn after that. The rubber will squeeze in and out because of the taper on the nut and the oil pump.

Re: Oil pan tube to oil pump seal
I would use the washers. They will prevent the nut from tearing the rubber. A drop of oil on each end, and it will finger tighten almost to the point of a perfect seal, that's why only 1/2 to one full turn with a wrench.

Re: Oil pan tube to oil pump seal
Thanks to everybody for your comments, very helpful. I got lucky and found the oem seal on none other then ebay. Perfect fit, I did not want to be a three time loser. If anybody needs one it is ebay item number 222232848192 and Ford part number B4A-6698A. Thanks again.
